Left the hostel and caught the bus to the train station and the train to Ferrara. Through reading my guide book, it sounded like an okay place for a day drip. The interesting part of town is at least 1km from the train station. On the way, noticed that many small businesses were closed for the holidays- in August most of the country goes away for holidays. The main attraction here is the Castello Estense, with moate and (green) water! Walked around the town and down the very quiet little streets. Found a little cafe for lunch. Then went into the castle. Saw the dungeons/prisons. Learnt about the history of the castle and the town. Went for a walk to the city walls on the edge of town. On the way saw the diamond building, a palace whose bricks are diamond shaped. The city walls didn't seem like a very good defensive system, they were low. Then walked back to the train station and caught a train back to Bologna. Went to the tower, hoping to climb it, back they were closing soon and I didn't want to be under pressure to get up and down the 498 steps.

Have seen many of these in Italy- cigarette vending machines, open all hours and accessible to everyone. I didn't see anyone checking ID?
