Well it is rather embarrassing to admit that while I have an Irish passport, and both Brendon & I have rellies originating from Dublin, neither of us have ever been to Dublin. Well, not that is, until a couple of weekends ago when we had an opportunity too good to pass up. Our touch team organised a social tournament with a bunch of people in Ireland. And we agreed to go - being thrilled that we’d finally get to see where our sncestors were from - albeit briefly. We flew over on the Friday night, checked out the infamous and overly ‘touristy’ Temple Bar. This is an area, not a bar and is full of hens & stags on their honeymoons (we had one of each on our flights - she with angel wings & ... read more

Friday April 27 Bus to Gatwick is surprisingly OK and seemed a lot quicker than the one we caught into london the other day. Flight to Dublin: seat, cattle class find any one you can first in best dressed. apparently it costs more for them to book you an allocated seat?? go figure. noisy poms, rude americans and crying foregin children FANTASTIC April 28th did a hop on hop off bus tour which took an hour and a bit . the tour showed all the major sights of dublin. April 29th got up around 8ish to get to the museum by ten when we thought it opened. took the bus for half an hour to get there to find it doesn't open until 2pm. the worst part was that the only reason for the bus to ... read more

Today was another warm day in Dublin. After a small breakfast at the hostel, my friend Mary (from BU who's studying in Spain) and I went and visited Dublin's Botanic Gardens. It was very pretty, but I didn't take any photos with my digital camera, instead focusing on the film camera. After returning to the city centre, we visited Christ Church Cathedral. It was interesting, having underground catacombs, but much of it looked as if it had placed there in the 1700's or later (as if things had been removed and replaced). We then headed to St. Audden's Church, which was a more modern church, but I didn't take many photos. After that, Mary and I stopped at a fish & chips place to get lunch before heading to the Guinness Storehouse. The storehouse itself ... read more

My trip to Ireland: Day 1 Europe » Ireland » Dublin » Dublin By bsmurf77April 26th 2007Scotland to IrelandBrian Murphy Well, I arrived safely in Dublin, Ireland. I truly had the smoothest air travel I have ever experienced on RyanAir. Strangely, customs took all of 2 seconds, and I met Mary really easily. We then took a 30 minute bus ride to the hostel. Traveling around Dublin, we visited or saw: the Custom House, The Jeannie Johnston Famine Ship, Merrion Square (a park), the National Gallery of Ireland, Trinity College and the Book of Kells ... read more

Ireland was great. I had such a good time getting around and seeing the different places. Spent a day doing the touristing thing on a hop on hop off bus. Went to Trinity College and the Book of Kells - pretty amazing. Gotta love a good old bible! I also went to St Patrick's but didn't go in because it cost too much for my lowly Aussie dollars! David, Clare and I went to the Guinness Storehouse. It was great. I pulled the perfect pint (apparently) and recieved a certificate to prove it! ... read more

its our last day in dublin. its been quite the stay. we basically managed to see everything in the city in one day...except for the guiness brewery, which we are planning on seeing today before we catch the bus back to london. yesterday we checked out a church and castle. we pretty much just wandered aroung though. there really isn't much to do during the day. at night the city is hopping though. we went pub hopping last night and met a bunch of students from various places in europe who have been studying here. we ended up tagging along with them all night. it was a good time...we're pretty tired now though. we can't wait to get to paris next! we have a studio apartment there. that'll be nice. we'll save some money by ... read more

After our overnight flight poor Kevin had to adjust to driving stick on the opposite side of the road through downtown Dublin. Luckily he had some practice while we were in South Africa so after only one minor mishap we made it safely to our hotel. We decided to splurge for the beginning of our trip and stayed in the Westin at College Green which is directly across from Trinity college and pretty close to Temple Bar. After quickly checking in and ditching our bags we decided to start our trip with a tour on one of those double-decker hop-on/hop-off buses. Since we were only in Dublin for one day this proved to be an easy and quick way to see a lot of the city. Our favorite stop was the Guiness Factory. We also explored ... read more

so we arrived in dublin yesterday morning after a 12 hour bus trip. the bus was terrible! what a horrible idea. i'm not sure why we didn't check about flying, i suppose we just didn't think about it. our hostel is interesting. the room is tiny and there is only one bathroom for the entire floor of about 10 rooms. we are sharing a room with another girl and a guy. the girl is really nice and from australia. we have met so many people in the hostel thanks to a huge common room where the computers are. we haven't seen much yet because we were so tired when we got in yesterday. we walked around alot and all the sights seem to be in walking distance, which is awesome...we'll save some money on transportation in ... read more

THURSDAY: We visited Ingersoll Rand (IR) this morning, whose Irish office focuses specifically on shared services/back-room office duties for all IR offices worldwide. Our speaker was good, and it was interesting to hear how they manage these services from one office across their diversified line of businesses - plus we got free hats!! (I think the hats are becoming the highlight of our trip!! Doesn't take much to get us excited, huh?) Next, we visited Cooley Distillery in Kilbeggan. Cooley is the only independent Irish-owned whiskey distillery in Ireland. They served us a soup & sandwich lunch then walked us through the original distillery and showed us how they used to make whiskey. The machinery was powered by a water wheel and steam engine. We discussed the history of the company and how whiskey is ... read more
