Today is the day of the whales. The wind has dropped and the water looks a lot calmer than yesterday.
I go for a walk and find the supermarket. Go in to get some orange juice and immediately hit by bakery smells that are enough to get me buying croissants for breakfast. Yummo.
Get organized, dump our waste waters (yes even the toilet has been used as an emergency). No issues and we have been given the go ahead to use the toilet if needed.
Do a tour of Davlik which takes all of 10 minutes then head back to Hauganes.
On the way we get a call from Jessica with the last minutes of the Melbourne/Brisbane game. Melbourne are 5 points down, having been over 20 points down for quite a while. This is a video call with the game being telecast to Iceland via Messenger from Jessica’s lounge room. Technology at its best.
Hard to concentrate on rain soaked roads while we are getting close to goal then we kick a goal to go 1 point up with 15 seconds left. Excitement and full concentration needed. Siren goes and we are all happy. Thanks
for the video call, now we can enjoy the whales even more.
Arrive in plenty of time for the whale trip. There is a coach group at the whale watch place - bugger. Go in and there are people everywhere. The girl at the counter lets us know the tour is going ahead but it will be windy, cold and possibly wet. They do give you a waterproof overalls to keep dry. She offers us to cancel and get our money back or do it tomorrow. Nope, we are here so we are in. As it turned out only half the Coach group were brave enough to do the tour so not too bad.
Get frocked up in our bright red suits with about 4 layers underneath to keep warm. Just like the Michelin man….
Onto the boat and away we go. Get the normal spiel about no guarantee to see whales but the early morning tour did see some so looking good. Commentator has a good repertoire and keeps us all amused on the way out.
Get out to a point where he says they have spotted whales. Excitement levels rise and those sitting start
to crowd us who have been standing at the front all the way.
Then we find more that are closer to the boat. Then more and by the end we were amongst a pod who were obviously feeding and happy to show themselves to us. All in all a good trip with lots of whale sightings. Some extremely close to the boat.
Back in and while the waters were rough the trip was relatively smooth. Even more so on the way back in. Happy campers.
Headed back into Akureyri for a walk and dinner then to a local campsite. Interesting place and still with 3 cruise ships in. Found a restaurant and had a great dinner.
Got back to the van and about to leave when I noticed the step hadn’t gone back in. Pressed the button. No response. Turned the van off and again no response. Tried a few things including brute force. No response. Rang the emergency service number and got moved a few times but eventually got a dude who sort of understood our issue - after a few goes at describing it to him - even did a video What’s App call.
He suggested a fix with a switch under the step. No luck. Now I have to call them tomorrow morning and hopefully they can fix for us. Bugger.
Got to the campsite with the step protruding out the side so had to be extra cautious with our width. Made it. Campsite is humongous. Settled in for the night now. Will see what the fixers can do tomorrow. Hopefully we don’t have to change vans. Way too much to unpack and re-pack.
