Early start disappeared after we called the grand kids and spent 35 minutes chatting with them. Time well spent though.
Heading back on ourselves a little to visit Dettifoss waterfall. Rain and more rain today. Temperature as we left was 4 degrees with a piercing wind blowing. And blow it did…
Turned off highway 1 to a secondary road which turned out to be much better than the main highway - and a lot less traffic.
Arrived at the car park for Dettifoss and waterproofed as much as we could. To no avail.
The rain was coming from all angles but we were here and kept going. We had a 1 km walk through pretty inhospitable country. Rocks everywhere but the track was well defined and maintained. Waterfall was huge / supposedly the strongest volume of water of any waterfall in Europe.
Lots of pics then down to the lower level to see it fall to the water at the bottom. This is where we got extra wet. Up to the top lookout level now. By this stage we were saturated but bugger it. Fantastic views and tremendous water flows.
Headed back to the truck
and stripped off our wet gear and into dry clothes - the beauty of having your gear in the van to change into.
Decided to have some nibbles so cheese, salami and Knacke bread. Maybe a little Vegemite as well. Very yummy in our tummies.
Next stop was a canyon that our ranger from yesterday mentioned - Asbyrgi Canyon. No walking this time but visited the information Centre which was nice and dry and warm. Lots of good info and they said we could drive down to the end of the road and see lots of the canyon walls - not the same as hiking into the main bits but no waterproofs left.
Stunning place so the drive did us well. Out onto the road and towards our stop for the night - Husavik. Windy on the open parts of the countryside so had to hold on tight so we didn’t blow away.
Made it safely to Husavik. Pretty fishing village with whale watching as one of their main attractions. Too rough to go out today so all tours here cancelled. We have actually booked a tour for Friday from Hauganes on the other side of
the harbour.
The campsite at Husavik was very very basic and open to the elements and any other sort of thing you can imagine. Not stopping here so decision made to drive on to Hauganes.
This included a 7.5 km tunnel under a bloody big mountain. Tolled but much quicker and easier than going over the mountain. Popped out the end at Akureyri - the second largest city in Iceland.
We were greeted with 4 cruise ships in the harbour right beside where we exited the tunnel. 2 tied up and the other 2 floating around looking for a parking spot - just like Eastland. Turns out there were another 2 tied up further down the harbour.
As we drove around past the docks there were buses everywhere taking people here, there and everywhere. Stay away from Akureyri tonight…..
Made it to Hauganes and found that campsite. Very very basic again. Hmmm. Decided to go to the next town - Dalvik. This campsite is basic but has a washing machine and dryer so here we are for the night. Only a short drive back to the whale watching tomorrow.
Rain persistently p….ing down so
no walkies or sitting outside tonight. Dinner was a use up all the bits left in the fridge job. Some spag bol again, egg and bacon sandwiches (obviously not for me) and bread toasted in the frypan with Vegemite and cheese. Good Icelandic tucker….
Hopefully the weather abates tomorrow, otherwise they might have to cancel our whsle watching - fingers crossed🤞
