This morning brought a hardy meal of bacon, blood sausage (Mike) and waffles. The boys attempted again to play with their soccer ball outside. Alas the small corgi like dog came running up to try to steal it again. Soccer game postponed.
After exploring the local Netto for groceries prior to National Day closings. National Day is like American Independence Day in that it is celebrated around the occasion of Iceland achieving independent rule from Denmark. However the events differ. In Reykjavik there are larger and longer events with parades and food,etc. However local towns do things on a smaller scale. We are currently in Egilsstadir. In this town they have a church service, a small parade, bouncy houses, a stage with singers and dancers, and a couple of sporting events like &@!&. Most of the events are geared towards families with children and teens. Unfortunately we missed part of it as when we arrived it had started to rain and they were quickly dismantling the bouncy items and the stage. One bouncy house was a climbing wall volcano with palm trees- very cool but mor Hawaiian!
During most of the morning and midday we broke into groups. Mike
and the boys took a 5 k hike to go fishing at the river below us. This after they dug in the compost pile of the farm for worms. They then had to navigate the horses in the field. Sam panicked and so Mike looked at the horses and said Go. Low and behold the horses went fast to the other side of the field. So Sam said Daddy was the horse whisperer.
Mary stayed at the house and knitted and watched out for the fishing crew.
Emma and Judith went horseback riding on Icelandic horses. These horses have 5 gears unlike the American horses that have 3. One of the gears is Trok ??? Where the horse basically goes from a trot where the rider bounces a bit to a very smooth ride. I could have ridden miles in that gear! We rode through lupine fields (smelled like a perfume factory - one I could deal with) and national forest (largest in Iceland). Stefan the owner was born at that house and his family had lived on that land for over 300 years.
Most of the rest of the day was spent around the house -
eating, playing Uno and just chilling. At one point Noah and Sam decided to play frisbee and soccer but the little dog tried to get the toys. So they went walking through the grass to try to distract the dog. Next thing they knew the dog had an old chewed up soccer ball. So the dog and the boys played with that. Pretty funny to watch two boys chasing a little dog with a size 5 soccer ball in his mouth!!
We did go for a short hike on the land up into the 2 acre forest that the owners have. In the middle was another field of lupine and a nice gazebo like structure for fires with seats. The boys also found a rock design and decided the elves made it with lots of pretty rocks. Beautiful and tiny wildflowers were all over.
Favorites for today -
Noah = fishing
Sam = walking in the forest and finding the elf rock design
Emma = horseback riding
Judith = not falling off the horse when the horse went into a fast run
Mike = hiking in the forest
Mary = soccer game
with the big inflatable balls
