. We have spent the day in the Hungarian town of Eger. The town itself is quite a treat with old castles and all that classic stuff...plus we got a really great room. The coolest part however is the valley of the sirens just outside of town. Here are hundreds of caves that serve as wines cellars. You get served homemade wine from old wooden barrels. If you want to buy some they just fill up a plastic jug. And it,s really good wine.   s;... read more

You could describe my time in Budapest as a bit of a rollercoaster. So far, things are going great. We have been climbing and climbing and climbing, and we still can't see the top. But that is the beautiful of a rollcoaster. You don't know when you will reach the top, you don't know what is on the other side, and you don't know which way it will pull you. I was about to find out. The crew woke up Sunday and tried to get around early, to limited, and I mean limited, success. We finally made it out to the Citadel in the early afternoon. From the view on top, we could see all of Budapest, and it was magnificent. Josh and I got some really amazing photos. Afterwards, we headed down to Grappa to ... read more

I don't know what I expected of budapest but it's not like i expected.  It's really cool though but so huge and our hostal is miles from the center..but we still walked the whole way and got to see tons of the local stuff i guess. It reminds me of an american city.  That is the side of the city called Buda which is more subrhan and mellow.  Pest is the more city like side.  Well we're having fun and tommorrow we have plently more to see here.... read more

So, I survived Prague, barely some might say. My next stop was what some people described to me as Prague without the tourists. After staying in Budapest for a couple of weeks I certainly would not agree with that assessment. I throughly enjoyed the city, and Hungarian wine. But it was here that I also lost my traveling companions and had to strike out on my own, if only for a bit. So, enjoy. When I last wrote you, the Denmark Jam Band(minus our rhythm guitarist, John, who wanted to stay in Prague one more day; and our cracked out back-up singer, Anni, for obvious reasons) was struggling to make it to Budapest. We did, but just barely. I sat next to a Hungarian man on the bus who had lived in Germany for thirty years ... read more

I’m backlogging some of my previous travels in Europe from when I was in high school and college. They won’t contain much information as it was a while ago, but I would be more than happy to share my experiences with anyone who has a question. My third favorite city in Europe. It is a fantastic city for backpackers; plenty of places to stay (I liked the Yellow Submarine personally), cheap food, good bars, nice parks, clean streets, beautiful architecture and the waterfront is one of the best. The locals aren’t exactly the friendliest, but once you get past the Eastern European roughness, they are fantastic. I had friends who were living there at the time, but it would be easy to do solo. ... read more

One of my favourite activities is walking in the forests and hills of the Mecsek - around 200 sq km of hills and forests, crossed by few roads, and with only a few villages. I’m lucky to live close enough to the edge of the forest to walk up the foothills and then pick a path to follow into the forest. For the most part the forest is either oak based, on the southern and western hillsides, or beech on the northern and eastern parts. Hungarians refer to the hills as mountains - but really they are too small to call mountains, big hills maybe. This year spring has arrived very late, March and April were some of the wettest and coldest that anyone could remember – but with the advent of May the temperatures have ... read more

May 1st 2004 will forever be remembered as an historic day by Europeans. The existing 15 member states of the EU today welcome an additional 10 members, mostly from Eastern Europe into the union. During 2003 and 2004 I’ve visited nearly all of the countries that joined today, with the exceptions of Slovenia and Czech Republic. In all the countries I visited there was both a sense of excitement at becoming a member and also trepidation, worrying that traditions, languages and ways of life will be lost. In Hungary where I’ve spent most of the last 8 months, the EU is generally welcomed. But also a sense of loss is held by many, after so many years of being an unwilling member of the Soviet Union to finally gaining freedom in 1991, and after such a ... read more

Siklós. South of Pécs in the Villány hills is Siklós (pronounced Shik-lowsh - well nearly). The town is built around a small hill, on which sits a castle that dates back to the 1300’s, like so much in Hungary it has seen many wars and invasions and has been destroyed and rebuilt many times. What remains is an 18th shell over foundations, cellars and dungeons that date back much further, surrounded by walls from the 15th century. Cleo a friend from my school days had come over for a short week to visit. So we went down to visit Siklós (meaning snakey) and Harkány for the day. Harkány famous for it’s healing thermal pools. The hours bus ride from Pécs was easy – finally after spending around 7 months in and around Hungary, I can manage ... read more
