Dag 1 -Rondreis Roemenië -dinsdag 28/8/2018 – Samenkomst in Debrecen (H). Gelukkig zijn we ... read more

Romantic Danube Viking River Cruise Viking had a sale on this voyage offering $300 airfare so I booked it in late 2017 and saved over $2,000 on airfare. I also decided not to spend extra for an extension before or after since this was just one of three vacations we had planned this summer I was trying to lilmit spending a little. The total was $7,800. This was a cruise that I had been wanting to take because it goes to Vienna and Budapest. Viking shows an amazing aerial view of the parliament building in Budapest in most of its advertisements and that caught my eye. It is an eight day and seven night cruise. Once again we chose a French balcony cabin because we feel like we want to be able to watch the countryside ... read more

It wasn’t a good night for sleep there were AC problems plus emails and texts that came in from the East coast. The phone had to remain on for the alarm plus we wanted to make sure the kids arrived back in New York safely. We woke up and our ship was tied to another ship. Our window looked into the side of the other boat. We got ready and headed to breakfast. They had champagne, but I didn’t indulge this morning. The ship was docked in Kalocsa Hungry (pronounced - Ka low cha). We boarded the bus and headed out on our adventure. The bus trip took about 20 minutes and we passed several corn fields and fields full of sun flowers. KK, I thought of you. We arrived at the horse farm and they ... read more

Went downstairs to eat breakfast and there were 200 people in line. It pays to be gold. We went back upstairs to the executive lounge and had breakfast there, no wait, good food. After breakfast we went in search of the Viking representative and located them on floor -1. We told them we weren’t going on the included tour since we had done it last year, instead we asked them about the hop on/off tour. He explained we could get the tour along with the optional tour down the side of the mountain (where we were). We choose that option as I was NOT going to hike up and down this mountain. We met the electric car in old town and enjoyed our ride down the mountain. At the bottom we transferred to the hop on/off ... read more

Statues seem to be the thing in Budapest When we spot something that we think sticks out or is special in a place we occasionally dedicate an entire blog to this. We think of these as theme blogs. This selection of "theme" is made in a totally non-scientific way. It's only what we personally find interesting and what pops up in our minds when we try to absorb everything at once. Examples of these "theme blogs" are Bulgaria - monuments Kotor, Montenegro - balconies Sur, Oman - doors Cuba - Yank Tanks Rome, Italy - fountains ... read more

We returned to the garage that fixed our water pump in the morning and they printed us off a diagram of the additional work that needed doing on the car. We thanked them for helping us out and decided to call in at IKEA before beginning our journey to Hungary. Just as we were pulling into the car park we heard a new strange noise that the car was making. Jack looked out his wing mirror and “oh fuck, the wheel!”. Char jumped out to find the back left wheel on a very scary angle with only one bolt in! We carefully and slowly moved the car inches further into a space and thanked our lucky stars it hadn’t fallen off going down the motorway. Chars dad thought the garage must not have tightened the nuts ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling southeast from Eger to Debrecen. Despite a wild night at the wine cellars, we were (once again) wide awake at 5am. The sun was rising over Eger Basilica, which was a beautiful sight from our small balcony. We headed down to a small external dining room/kitchen for a very basic but enjoyable breakfast. Baskets of bread rolls were on the table, along with plates of cheese, salami, ham and tomatoes. We made ham and cheese rolls, which we washed down with endless cups of tea. It had been, after all, a full-on wine tasting at Biro Borozo the night before, and we were thirsty. After breakfast we said goodbye to Sir Charles, the resident cat, threw our packs on a private minibus and set off for Debrecen, Hungary’s second largest ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling northeast from Budapest to Eger. We were wide awake at 5am, and because we were leaving Budapest in the late morning, we were feeling a little flat. However, nothing that a glass of champagne for breakfast couldn’t solve. Along with the champagne, I gathered a selection of muesli, yoghurt, toast, cheese, salami, pink grapefruit juice and tea. It was a great start to the day, despite the grumpy breakfast staff. We organised our packs for our train trip to Eger, then headed to the Basilica of St Stephen to see if we could finally, after numerous attempts, get to see St Stephen’s mummified hand. We walked around the Basilica for about 10 minutes, looking for the mummified hand, but to no avail. It was time to ask, as we had ... read more

HE SAID... We were wide awake at 4am, so we caught up on a few work-related issues before heading down to breakfast at 7:30am. And like the day before, it was a fantastic affair – endless varieties of bread, cheese, cured meats and pastries, along with cereals, tea and juices. We knew we wouldn’t be eating until 2pm, so we fuelled up for a morning of walking. We headed straight for Elizabeth Town and the Jewish Quarter to get a feel for our neighbourhood, as it was very close to our hotel. With the help of a friendly local, we found a bank to withdraw some cash, then walked a short distance to the Great Synagogue for a guided tour of the second largest Jewish house of worship in the world. Our guide was a young ... read more
