With the temperature predicted to get to 38C today we wanted an early get away. Our accommodation was "out of town" with no shops within 5kms. So the plan was to stop at the next town some 13kms away to get some breakfast and supplies for the day. We rolled out of Tassi around 8:15am and were presented with our first dilemma at about 8:20am.
It seems our path today starts on the levee wall which consists of a fairly indistinct dirt track. With little other option we head on down the track which progressively gets worse becoming a single line of dirt in the grass and finally disappearing altogether leaving just a grass top on the levee. We decide we're better off on the road and take the first opportunity to divert.
As we roll up to the grocery store Jeff calls out. His rear rack has somehow worked itself loose from the top attachments and is hanging off the back of his bike with panniers attached. We spend the next 15 minutes refitting his rack to the bike and ensuring everything is secure.
After we do our shopping we decide to stop at this point for our
morning break and take a little time at a park in town. As we leave we can already feel the heat of the day starting to bare down.
Our distance today is 66kms and it's been slow going due to the bad track, Jeff's mechanical and the fact we needed to do some shopping. We not only have to contend with the heat but there is a pretty strong head wind as well.
By about 12pm th sun was beating down and there was little shade to be had. We eventually had to turn down a side track and head to the tree line to find some shade. The shade makes all the difference and we also had protection from the wind. We opened the supplies we had bought in the morning and perhaps lingered a little too long. We still had 20kms to travel and the day was getting even hotter.
We decided to stop at the next town and get a cold drink as we were also running low on water. Being a Saturday and after 1pm, the first grocery store we tried was closed. Luckily the next one was still open and we all
Lunch.
Down a side track to some shade bought cold water to consume immediately and to top up our water bottles.
We still had 12kms to the next town and our hotel. The cold water had certainly helped pick us up a bit and we left with a bit more energy than we previously had. We actually kept a pretty good pace up sharing the effort into the wind. Again we were on a semi busy road which is never fun but at least the edges were good. We rolled into Kolacsa about 2:15pm. When you stop pedalling and get off the bikes you realise just how hot it is and how hard the effort has been. That cold shower was certainly welcome. The hotel has a sauna - maybe I'll give that a miss.
Distance travelled today: 66kms
Distance travelled so far: 2,965kms
All going well we'll crack 3,000kms tomorrow on our way to Baja.
Only a few photos today. This was due to not wanting to stop in the heat and the lack of anything spectacular that demanded to be photographed. While we road within a couple of hundred meters of the river we never saw it all day.
