Our morning start
Rare glimpse of the river and the gravel track We had a hotel breakfast this morning. A small panic when the coffee machine was blocked (Arrgh!) but they had another one in reception, so disaster averted.
We wanted to get away early because of the extreme heat again today (38C) and we did good, being on the road just after 8am. Distance today was only 48kms and our aim was to be finished before lunch (barring any mechanicals or punctures).
From Kolocsa back to the river was 6kms on the road and then we were confronted by a long stretch of gravel back on the levee wall. It was about 12kms which is much slower going and the vibrations certainly make it tougher. By our morning break at 10am we had covered almost 30kms. The only shade we could find was in front of a house that was weirdly built right up to the levee. The only one we have seen like this. There was a guy hosing his garden out front.
We stopped in front of the house in the shade and gave him a nod. He could see we were hot and flustered and he gestured with his hose. We looked at each other and
nodded back to him. He came over to the fence and gave us each a misty shower of cold water which we appreciated very much. All this without a word being spoken or understood.
He went back to watering his garden and we had our snack.
When we left we waved good bye to "Hose Guy" and started off. It had gotten noticeably hotter in the 20 minutes we had stopped. I had messaged our accommodation if we could get in early today and they sent back check-in was from 2pm due to cleaning. Ah well, we'd have to find some shade til then.
The path conveniently became asphalt again and our pace improved, so much so, that we got to town about 11:40am. We had been no further than 100m from the Danube all day but never saw it due to the trees between the levee wall and the river. The temperature was now 32C and climbing.
Despite being so early we took a chance and went to our accommodation. It's a private apartment and not a hotel, so there is no reception and the key is in a key safe with a combination. Amazingly the
key was in the safe and the apartment had already been cleaned so we were able to get in straight away, and, the aircon was on! We considered this a big win for the day.
Our route is quite fluid at the moment (an outcome of not planning the route comprehensively) and we've realised that we'll actually be nipping over the border of a couple of countries we weren't expecting to - not sure if that's a good or bad thing.
The other major point of note today is hitting the 3000km mark. Wow, that's a lot in anybodies language. There's still about 1,300 to 1,400kms to go, which is also a lot in anybodies language.
Distance travelled today: 48kms
Distance travelled so far: 3,014kms - Woohoo!!!!
