August 12, 2016Bratislava. Another city that was founded by Celtic tribes 2000 years ago. It has gone through the rise and fall of many empires. The historic old town is charming with its medieval castle, a maze of narrow pedestian streets and myriad sidewalk cafes. To date it is my favorite. There is much more to see here than I expected. However, we spent only one day, not enough time to see everything. But it was well worth the visit. It is the capital of Slovakia. Population: 500,000. The total population of Slovakia is only 5 million. Slovakia was part of the former Czechoslovakia. After the fall of communism it gained its independance, although 75% of the population did not want to separate (according to a public opinion pole). Our guide was telling us that the ... read more

Around the afternoon we arrived at Budapest. As we were completely wasted we decided to sleep a bit before we explore the city. Our accommodation was on budget base, so were staying at a guest house with a shared living room and bathroom. We took a nap until 18:00 refreshed ourselves and went out. From our accommodation to the city center is approximately 40 minutes by foot. Since on our path there are many spots for sightseeing, and we didn't want to search for a parking spot in the center, we went by foot. Walking next to the Danube which is dividing Buda and Pest, enjoying the nice view of the bridges and buildings, we felt some rain drops coming down. Time to look for shelter and perhaps combine it with dinner. Beside the Danube we ... read more

Budapest, Hungary 6/26/2016 - 6/30/2016 Budapest started off the right way, with drinking and soccer of course. Our flight from Crete to Budapest was a little stressful as we had to catch an early bus from Bali to Heraklion, about 1 hour, and then get on another bus to the airport which was super confusing and then we found out that the airport was packed, and I mean packed: people were overflowing from the check-in desks to the outside waiting area. Luckily, that was for a different airline and ours was super smooth. We landed in Athens had a nice little break before landing in Budapest in the early evening. We booked an apartment, not through AirBnB but booking.com, and met our host outside of his place on Castle Pony street on the Buda side of ... read more

Geo: 47.4984, 19.0408 This is the second morning I've woken up in Hungary. Outside my window is ... the window of another boat. It is so close that if we could open these windows I could touch theirs, a very unpleasant docking. But those who have cabins on the other side are enjoying (at least I hope they are!) sunny views of the stunning Parliament building, overlooking the boat-crowded Danube. But soon I will leave to continue exploring Budapest; this is our last day here and I have so many things I want to see. Budapest's name came into being in 1873 when the three cities of Buda, Pest, and Obuda (Old Buda) joined into one large, lovely city, becoming the capital of Hungary. Buda is on the right bank of the Danube River, hilly, green, ... read more

Great flight from Madrid . Coming into the Budapest airport was so simple and efficient . The taxi set up was so smooth and very professional . Very impressed our driver was so nice too . Our first impressions were all positive and as ofb10:30 pm we have not changed our opinions . Seeing the Danube and all the river boats was also impressive . We are staying at the Marriot and it is adjacent to our Viking ship dock . The view from our room is just beautiful . As I write this I'm looking out the huge picture window looking at the river and the illuminated bridges. After getting settled in the hotel we went for a 2 her walk here on the Pest side of the river . I'm taking by the Hungarians ... read more

I've become quite the celebrity on Instagram lately, don't you know! My account is so popular it's got to the stage I can message a girl from a destination I plan to visit, and an invitation to meet could well be on the cards. While planning this trip to Europe one girl has been corresponding regularly for several months. She has been unfailingly polite, positive, and enthusiastic about meeting up in Europe. She lives in Budapest, and it's been ten years since my last visit so I organised to fly in to meet her at the start of my adventure. My friends and family at home have been aghast at the idea of meeting a foreign girl from the internet, and there have been plenty of jokes flying around about being trussed up and gagged in ... read more

Our final day in Budapest, and the longer you stay in this remarkable city, the greater your admiration grows for the strength of its citizens. We learned today that almost 80% of the city was destroyed or badly damaged by the allies during WW2, and it was rebuilt in under five years. Remarkable! The might of the Russian industrial machine probably helped, but at what cost? Perhaps the gentle pace of the Canterbury rebuild isn't such a bad thing after all. A visit to the Terror Museum was chilling. It is commemorating sixty years since the Hungarian citizen's uprising against the Russians, in October/November 1956. It is also a timely reminder to never take our freedom for granted. The Hungarian people have endured centuries of oppression, and still there is an air of optimism as they ... read more

Budapest....what a remarkable city. Clearly the Hungarian spirit is indomitable, and there is a wonderful mix of ancient and modern architecture on display. A visit to 'The Hospital in the Rock', clearly illustrates how Hungarians refused to be defeated. This unique hospital, created within a labyrinth of ancient caves, beneath the Buda Castle district, was credited with saving thousands of lives during WW2, and again during the uprising against the Russians in 1956. Also, many Jewish citizens sought refuge in the caves, and were given fake identities, so they could escape the Nazi persecution. Highly recommended, and poignant, as we remembered our Anzacs yesterday. Good advice to use the Hop on Hop Off bus to get a feel for the city, and orientate ourselves, paid off...pity we had to sit upstairs, out in the open, in ... read more
