02 October 2014 On the drive south through France and Italy we listened to Victoria Hislop’s novel called The Island about the leper colony which existed between 1903 and 1957 on the small island of Spinalonga off the northeast coast of Crete. This made us want to visit it which we did today.
We reluctantly left the peaceful Mohlos and drove past more wide ranging coastal views, through the regional capital of Agios Nikolaos to the village of Plaka where we caught a boat to Spinalonga. Walking around seeing where people had suffered the effects of the disease before a cure was found was a moving experience.
We slayed on a taverna’s car park in Plaka and a surprise large firework display made a perfect end to the day.
