The first European advanced civilisation were the Minoans who lived in Crete. Our day started with a visit to nearby Phaestos the site of the remains of one of the Minoan royal palaces constructed in about 1700BC. It was built on the site of an earlier palace around a large central court and two smaller courts and is located in a stunning position with views over the Mesara Plain and Mount Psilorits.

We then continued our journey eastward for 130k mainly through hilly country covered with vineyards and huge areas of olive plantations and stayed at the coastal resort of Koutsounari which had the first campsite since we left Matala.
