Spent the day driving around the extraordinary countryside of Meteora and visiting the various monasteries perched precariously at the tops of the rock columns. Lots of steps involved to actually reach the monasteries and not for the faint hearted or immodestly dressed as these are living religious communities. Visited the Great Meteora Monastery for a couple of hours. It has a few fascinating exhibitions including beautiful illuminated manuscripts and more recent history on display, including Italian propaganda posters from WWII.
Have not come across an explanation of how these magnificent rock formations were formed. Our guide book mentions that geologists do not have a consensus. They are huge and remind us of the Olgas in central Australia.
Enjoyed another taverna supper in Kastraki village. There is a bushy area that we passed on the way back to the hotel with dozens of fireflies, little yellow flashes of light like tiny Christmas tree lights.
