Plaka Hotel Rooftop
What a magnificent view Well after the flights that never wanted to end I finally made it here. Made it through all the airports without getting lost much. Trip to Helsinki was exhausting. Didn't get much sleep or at least I didn't feel like I did. But by the time I got to Rome my spirits were lifting as I could see the end of the flights. My biggest fear was getting through Rome airport as I had to collect my bags and re-check in with another airline within 40 minutes. Everything went smoothly until the baggage carousels. They have about a dozen of them and they're huge. Took me ten minutes just to figure out which one my luggage would come out on. But I figured it out, made my way to the next terminal and checked in with 5 minutes to spare. Yay me I am the airport Queen! FYI Leonardo da Vinci airport - not for the faint hearted
Got into Athens and caught a cab straight to my hotel. I had intended to train it into the city but the flights were so tiring I thought it best to take the easiest route. And the fares were fixed so it
Plaka Hotel
My view at night didn't matter if I got a dodgy cabbie. Not that I had to worry, my cabbie was lovely, asked me all about Australia, told me all about his family, complained about the economy, and then pointed out the sights for me. Got to my hotel and headed straight for the shower. Man did it feel good, after 42hrs of travel I was pretty ripe. Might have been the first time a cabbie smelt better than his passenger
After my shower I felt a million times better so I decided to go for a walk. Found ruins inside of 5 minutes. Amazing. I had no idea what the ruins were because the signs were all in greek, but I was still enthralled I found the Plaka market no problem at all (I am staying in the Plaka district) which was good because I was quite hungry. Sat down to a souvalaki and glass of wine for €9. Can't complain. I was approached by a few hawkers/beggers while I ate but the waiter chased them off. The signs of the economic struggle are all around. Empty stores, graffiti on abandoned buildings. Even my cabbie commented they are losing their young people who immigrate to other countries to find work. I wonder if they will ever get out of the mess they are in.
Got completely lost getting back to my hotel. Had to ask the nice police officers for directions. Still managed to walk right past my hotel without seeing it. This could be dangerous. Went up to the rooftop bar. There is a magnificent view of the acropolis all lit up at night. It is exquisite. I think I'm gunna like it here. But for now I must get some rest. My head is spinning, jet-lag must be kicking in Time for beddie byes
