Up the side of the caldera in buses?!
Location: Santorini
Weather: Sunny, 30°C

At Santorini we arrived in the new port by tender boats, the journey in the caldera was quite rough as the wind had picked up again. The road up the side of the caldera in the bus was quite scary as you were often perched at the edge of the cliff. I visited a winery while on Santorini, the grape vines are grown on the ground in a basket shape in order to protect the grapes from the hot dry wind. The wine was very nice but 10am was a little early to be having a drink.

The tour visited a great museum in Santorini that housed artefacts collected from Akrotiri. Akrotiri was covered in ash during the last massive volcanic eruption on the island. The eruption caused the island to be abandoned but preserved the city well. The example of the frescos from Akrotiri were very beautiful. The people from Akrotiri were merchants and traded all over the Mediterranean and then came home and created frescos of the things they had seen. The blue monkeys depicted the animals that the traders obviously saw in Africa. However one person from the cruise - lets

call them D&D (think movie with Jim Carey) wanted to know where they could visit the Blue Monkeys while on the island! This has not been the first incident with D&D but it was definitely the most memorable.

Walked through the town of Fira before heading back to the ship - very tourist in terms of shopping which didn’t interest me at all. I did not go back down the mountain via the donkey train as it was very hot and the 30 minutes to go down would have meant I got too sunburnt. I went down via the cable car which offered some great photo shots. Tender boat was very choppy going back to the ship and so I decided not to go back to Santorini for a swim.

See the donkey train on its way down, it gets very steep and the donkeys go very fast down.
