Ya sas (Hello) Friends & Family...
So we have been a little pathetic with the blogs lately and the only explanation I can provide is that the Greek lifestyle starts alot later in the day and ends ridiculously early in the morning which means the hangovers are much more frequent which translates to minimal time spent on the computer... and you know me, it's hard to say "no" to a late night glass of wine… so you can see the problem!!!
Dan and I have been busy settling into Greek island life... which to be honest involves ALOT of socializing over a glass of Ouzo, ALOT of late nights out on the town (the Greeks don’t even leave for the bar until 1:00am and don’t get home until the sun comes up), ALOT of late afternoon 3-hour meals that consist of dolmades, fresh grilled calamari and octopus, greek salad, hummus and pitas and ALOT of lazy afternoons spent sun tanning and swimming in the Aegean Sea... we must admit the lifestyle definitely agrees with us… even if we are still trying to acquire a taste for Ouzo!!!
We arrived in Rhodes almost a month ago and
our good friend Megan had pre-arranged a small apartment for us in the Old Town, which is "MAGICAL". Our place is very small but the location is perfect. We live above a small Greek Tavern, which is in the most stunning little courtyard off one of the main streets in the heart of the Old Town amidst the labyrinthine of cobblestone alleyways. The Old Town, which is enclosed within massive stonewalls, is actually the largest inhabited medieval town in Europe. The medieval citadel or “Old Town” was constructed by the ‘Knights of St. John’ in 1306, which they inhabited until 1522 at which point the Turks invaded. The Old Town is pedestrian only and is surrounded by huge moat (4kms around) plus there are 11 Grand Gates (entrances) and even though the town is packed with tourist shops, cafes, wine bars, roof top taverns and discos, not to mention the hoards to tourists who flock to Rhodes daily, the Old Town still exudes a noble and forbidding aura. In short it's a pretty amazing place to "call home" for the next 3 months and it is fantastic to unpack our bags, hang up our clothes and get into a bit
of a day-to-day routine (but not for too long though… you know us… as soon as we unpack our feet get itchy… ha,ha,ha!!!).
The weather has been excellent since we arrived… apparently Rhodes is having a “heat wave” but considering its been occurring for over a month I think the heat it is here to stay. Yesterday Dan, Yiannis (Megan’s husband), Manos (Megan’s brother in law), Megan and I drove down the island towards the town of Lindos for an afternoon of sun tanning and swimming at Afandou Beach. The water is still very chilly (but refreshing... we are definitely not talking Thailand style!!!) but the water is the most beautiful “Aegean Blue" and SO clear. Most of the beaches on Rhodes are made up of small smooth stones and there is absolutely NO garbage in sight (water or beach), which is such a welcome contrast from S.E Asia. Also my sister, Tiffany was in Rhodes last week, which was awesome. We spent 8 great days together hanging out, catching up, touring around the island in a "micro machine" of a rental car and of course hitting up as many beaches as possible (this is my sister we are
talking about here!!!). It was so great to have her here with us and it was really hard to say goodbye so soon… not even the promise of young, hot Greek guys and the lure of the beaches could convince her to stay a little longer (we miss you Tiffy!!!) and she unfortunately had to head back home to start a new job.
I should also mention that while this “traveling” thing is all fun and games both Dan and I are working for the summer. Dan has landed a job selling tickets to all the hot girls on the beach for a “Party Boat” that goes out 3 days a week and just like old times I am working with Megan at her restaurant “Bombay” which she has leased for the summer. But like everything the Greeks do nothing is too serious, therefore work is really just another form of play with a bit of money at the end of the day to pay our rent and buy few rounds of Ouzo. I mean seriously did you hear what Dan does… he literally walks the beaches, works on his tan and sweet talks all the girls into buying
Beach or Acropolis?
When with Tiff it is always "to the beach"!!! tickets… ok, so there are guys involved with this “Party Boat” too but his ticket sales are much more “female oriented” if you know what I mean…. ha,ha,ha!!! Yup, life is hard but someone’s gotta have the guts to do it!!!
So… it’s been over 6 months, 14 flights and 12 countries since we left in January and we are still loving every minute… and of course we are still walking hand in hand. We hope all of you have a fantastic summer... ensure to drink a few Ceasar's on a sunny patio over looking the Pacific Ocean for Dan and I and of course we will throw back a few Ouzo's over looking the Aegean Sea for all of you.
Much love from our island... to yours...
Until Next Time…
PS- Tonight is the Euro Cup 2008 final (Germany vs. Spain) which is a very big deal for all these football crazy Europeans and since I am now technically a “German resident” even though we are living in Greece… GO DEUTSCHLAND GO!!!!
