Day 2 in Berlin.
Tody we had our first breakfast at our European hotel. It consisted of bread, meats, cheeses, and even soft boiled eggs. a few of them learned how to crack the top off the soft boiled egg and scoop it out. After breakfast we headed off for our sightseeing tour. Our local guide was a guy called Kevin Kennedy and some of the kids found him a bit boreing, but he was very informative and I did not find him so bad. Our tour was mostly driving around in the bus seeing all of the major sights. We stopped at a few places such as the big concert hall, but it was mostly just going buy places and pointing out interesting events or things that have happened at certain places. From the obvious such as where Presidents Kennedy, and Regan gave their famous speeches, to things such as where tom cruise shot his latest movie and the hotel where Michael Jackson dangled his baby from the hotel (that got more reaction than all the other "history" stuff. Our guided also busted one of the american myths about President Kennedy's speach. He said Kennedys proclomation of "ich bin ein

About to learn a life lesson about street preformers and their ways of getting you to pay for a photo. berliner" was proper and accepted and all germans took it as such. the part about him saying "I am a jelly doughnut" is true in a way becasue they do have a pastry called a berliner, but it was proper to say what he did. Anyway, we ended our tour at a section of the wall that has been kept in place and that was very cool. you could walk along the wall, see the no-mans zone. After that we went to the checkpoint charlie museum and saw and read a bunch of facts and history about that which the kids were great about really trying to read and understand what it was about. Sometimes I forget that most of these kids were born after the wall was down. Maybe I don't want to accept that I am getting older and my "recent memories" are history. After the Museum we broke into several groups for a free time walk through the city to a pre-assigned meeting place. All of the groups successfully navigated the small section of the city and made it to the meeting point back on time. Many of them bought a few items, and even explored a

Emme and Katie Rowley history museum all on their own. We ended the day with visits to the Pergomon museum, which has a bunch of ruins from Turkey and then saw Queen Nephrititi in an Egypt exhibit. The group also experienced a cultural event tonght when on our free dinner night we were able to see Germany loose to Croatia in the Europe cup soccer match. After the Croations won many went driving up and down the street waiving their Croatian flags and making quite a scene. The Germans responded and soon police were in the streets breaking up arguments and controlling the masses. most of the kids thought it was "awesome" to see all that.
Well that is about it for today, it i now about 11:45 and everyone is in their room, but I can hear a few of them still talking because there is a central courtyard in our hotel that many of the windows face and the sand carries quite well. I am going to try and post a few photos and see if this works.
till next time, Scott
