A picture of our photobooth shots There is only one picture with today's entry because my camera batteries died and I didn't have any new ones with me, but that's okay; today was important.
The morning was spent just getting onto campus with the group and filling out paperwork and doing things like getting our schedules. Anna and I totally lucked out, because the middle school we are observing doesn't need us until next week, so while everyone else starts their observations this week, we don't start until next Monday- AND ours is the closest one, so we have way less of a commute. We went over lesson plans with him, etc etc, and mostly it was just bureaucratic stuff.
Then we came back around 2 and Anna and I hit the grocery store again. We have to go so often because we can't carry that much, and even with our reusable bags, there's only so much we can cart back to the dorms. I came back and took a brief nap, and then finished my lesson plan and sent it off to my partner.
Kara and I set out to find the building that we will be observing university classes in tomorrow, and
luckily we managed to find it after some clever website-ing and map locating, so we know where we are going tomorrow.
Then we started drinking beer and hanging out in "the party room" aka Anna's room, and when Jackie and Stephanie got there, they said they wanted to actually go out to a pub and find some beer, so we all said "okay!" and I came down to scarf down a salami sandwich for dinner and then Kara came to get me before we set out. We weren't really sure where to go other than a general direction that Dr. G told us to go towards, so we decided to have an adventure and take the tram there.
We ended up walking and finding the street Brittany remembered that had amazing restaurants on it, AND a bar called "Katy's Garage"- obviously, since it was spelled like my name, it was a good sign! We went in and immediately made friends with a German guy sitting at the bar who was excited that we were American and spoke impressive English with us. We sat down, took some pictures with Anna's camera (which I had commandeered for the night) and
oh rock, Anna just put the pics on facebook, so I have them now! Yay!
We ended up making even MORE friends, and got some phone numbers to hang out with them. Turns out, our friend at the bar had been to Tokyo last summer, and was SO EXCITED to learn that I, too, had been there, AND that I spoke a bit of Japanese. We talked about Japan and Tokyo and I taught him how to say "Japan is awesome!" in Japanese, and we decided to try and see if we could catch a tram home before it got too late.
On the way, we found a photobooth. We weren't sure if all 6 of us could fit, but by god, we made that work. I am so happy. I feel like I've got these amazing friends already, these girls that I like and trust and feel comfortable around. When we got back, we sat up on the 14th floor balcony and drank a few more beers and shared secrets, and it was just really amazing. <333 I'm so happy. I couldn't have asked for better people to be on this program with.
Tomorrow starts observations,
so I actually have to start working, but that's alright. 😊 This has already been the experience of a lifetime. 😊)))
