No ash clouds or misbehaving volcanoes were out to spoil our flights to Berlin. After a quick afternoon nap we were out to see one of Europe´s great cities. Construction is a never-ending process and each time that we return there are many changes. The new modern cathedral near the bombed ruins of an old cathedral had been completed and the Brandenburg Gate was cleaned and freshly painted.
A stop at the Pergamon Museum is always a "must see" for us. The Altar of Zeus and the Babyalonian Ishtar Gate are two of our favotite ancient exhibits.
KaDeWe, the giant department store, was filled with interesting and delicious treats. We always seem to by pass the clothes, etc. on the first five floors and go directly to the food market on the sixth floor. It´s like a food museum! After strolling through the aisles of meat, fish, cheese, olives, fresh pasta, wine, pasteries, and candy counters we headed to the seventh floor for dinner in the gourmet cafeteria. It is all such fun and oh, so very good!!!
Very early Saturday morning we left Berlin and traveled to Mainz. What an unusual day of travel that was! Our
This view includes both the old and the new Reichstad (the German seat of government).
first train left twenty minutes early, without any prior notification. We missed that one. The second train was also leaving twenty minutes early, at least we were aware of that change. Then, the next two trains were late and that caused us to miss the only train that left on time that day. It was not a good day for the German trains.
With our base in Mainz, we explored castles, vineyards, and small villages along the Rhine. The villages are indescribably quaint with old half-timber architecture, overflowing flower boxes, meticulous gardens and vineyards, stately cathedrals, and massive hill top castles. We visited several villages/castles arriving there by train, boat, or by foot.
It was a fast-paced six days and soon we were on the train to Geneva. Along the way, since it was such a lovely day, we stopped in Interlaken and did a boat trip on Lake Brienz. It was so close and just too good to pass since it was free on our Eurail pass that day.
Early the next morning we were on the flight to the Canary Islands. We will be visiting four islands and will be here until June 7.
I´m having some difficulty uploading photos this trip so I´ll do my best to include what I can. The road is treating us well and we´re enjoying the beauty along the way.
