Ahhh.... what a relaxing Sunday it was. (Especially considering Marina and I were at the wedding till 2am) Of course, neither of us woke up really early. Unfortunately, Marina had to head back to Köln soon after she got up. She still had a lot of studying to do and a test to take. =/ She's studying for the German equivalent of the CPA exam. But, it was still very very nice to see her and, I'll be seeing her again when I go to Köln next week. =)
Later that afternoon, Mama, Papa and I went for a walk around the Sorpesee, a lake in the area. Just a few years ago, they re-did the area around the lake, with new walkways and play areas for kids. It's sooooo nice. There were quite a number of sailboats out on the lake and lots and lots of motorcycles!
We walked along the lake and then decided to walk down along the bottom of the dam. The trail took us through the woods. What a gorgeous and pleasant walk it was. Then, we we walked along the bottom of the dam and along a smaller water basin. Every so often,
water flows from the Sorpesee down to this other basin to create electricity and then the water is pumped back into the Sorpesee (obviously using less electricity than is produced). The water from the Sorpesee flows into the Ruhr river which eventually flows into the Rhein. The dam was built in the 1930s and was unsuccessfully bombed during WWII.
After our walk, we went to an ice cream parlor to enjoy delecious ice cream as we looked out over the lake. Ahhh... how relaxing and beautiful. =) Of course, I ordered a Strawberry cup. I had been looking forward to having ice cream here since I booked my flight back in October! Ahh... Italian ice cream very creatively presented. The ice cream almost looked too good to eat..... almost ;-) Deeeeeeeeeelicious =)
That evening, Anne (Mama's sister) and Elmer came over for a BBQ. What a perfect day it was for one. While we were sitting out on the terrace, Anne saw a popped balloon hanging in a tree in the yard. Dangling from it was a postcard. Papa went over to get it. It came from a town about a 150 km away. We decided it would
be quite neat if I took the postcard with me on my travels and then mailed it from Kerman. So, I wrote a letter to the kid (well, the assumption is that it was a kid who sent the postcard flying with the balloon) explaining that we had found the postcard in Stockum, but it's travels aren't done. I'm going to write a little something on the postcard here, then again in Lebanon and at last back in California. I'll mail the postcard from there. When all is said and done, that postcard will have traveled more than 9,000 miles! =) What a fun thing it'll be to take the card travling with me. =)
We wrapped up the day by watching the Germany vs. Denmark soccer game. It's currently the European Soccer Championship games here. Germany won! =) Looking forward to their match against Greece on Friday. Well, wrapping up for now. Until next time. =)
