Today, Franzi and Maike graduated from the Gymnasium in Sundern. The celebrations began this morning with a church service and then "Zeugnis Ausgabe", passing out of the report cards. Kind of like receiving their diplomas. I wasn't at either of these events. In the evening I joined the festivities as the celebrations continued with the Abi-ball. Family and a few friends who were fortunate enough to be able to receive a dinner card joined the graduating class in the Stockum Schützenhalle for an elegant dinner. In many ways the night reminded me of Prom. The ladies were all dressed in long elegant dresses. The hall had be nicely decorated with flowers on the long tables. Franzi and Maike looked beautiful. Luckily, we were all able to get a seat together (Bernd, Angelika, Johanna, Franzi, Maike, Anne, ... read more

What a wonderful 1st week back in Stockum. I've had a great time with family and friends. It is kind of amazing how many friends I still have around here even 10 years after I lived here. Here are some of the weeks highlights ;-) Monday I went for a walk around Stockum with my friend Nina and her new 9 month old baby Maja. =) She was soooo adorable. It was great to catch up with Nina. We took the shorter walk as rain was threatening, although it did not appear. Tuesday afternoon I met up with Juli and her husband Christian. We went into Sundern for ice cream. MMMMMM... straweberrry cup. I love it. =) I really I'm going to miss the ice cream. It was fun just hanging out with them. In the ... read more

Ahhh.... what a relaxing Sunday it was. (Especially considering Marina and I were at the wedding till 2am) Of course, neither of us woke up really early. Unfortunately, Marina had to head back to Köln soon after she got up. She still had a lot of studying to do and a test to take. =/ She's studying for the German equivalent of the CPA exam. But, it was still very very nice to see her and, I'll be seeing her again when I go to Köln next week. =) Later that afternoon, Mama, Papa and I went for a walk around the Sorpesee, a lake in the area. Just a few years ago, they re-did the area around the lake, with new walkways and play areas for kids. It's sooooo nice. There were quite a number ... read more

Yesterday, I left home and a 3 hour car ride, almost 11 hour flight and another 2 1/2 hour car ride I arrived home. =) It feels so good to be back in Germany. The plane ride was uneventful, exactly the way it should be. I was sooo excited when we finally landed in Frankfurt. I knew my papa was waiting for me and I couldn't wait to see him. I was going to have to be patient though, as it took over an hour to get off the plane, walk thorugh the airport (and walk and walk and walk), go through customs and get my bag. When I was finally able to walk through the doors exiting out to where people were waiting to meet passengers I was thouroughly exhausted but also filled with excitement ... read more

Yep, I'm back in Stockum. =0) I arrived on the 31st and brought in the New Year here at home with a group of friends. It's great to be back in Stockum. It almost feels like I never left, except Johanna, Franzi and Maike, my little cousins have all changed so much. They've grown up since I've been gone. I've been spending my time seeing old friends. Many of them are home for the holidays from various parts of Germany where they're going to school. It's been 3 years since I've seen most of them! That's waaay too long. Naja... that's not why I'm writing today. Today in Germany it's Der Tag Der Drei Königen (The Day of the Three Kings). In most of Germany the day is no longer observed, but today reminds me of ... read more

This will be the last entry I'll be writing from Germany for a while. The next will be from Kenya! Tomorrow morning I'm off to Frankfrut to begin my 24 hour travel day to Mombasa Kenya. Quite excited but also a little nervous and scared... but mostly excited. It's been a great semester in Germany and I can't believe it's over already. Now I'm ready for some very new adventures in Kenya. I'll try to write as often as I can. I'll also be trying to get pictures up on my site when I can. Here's my itenerary in case you're interested in seeing what I'll be up to: KENYA: SWAHILI STUDIES & COASTAL CULTURES SPRING 2006 PROGRAM SCHEDULE** February 5 - 11 Program Orientation & Introduction to Swahili Language: Mombasa & Malindi FSS February 12 ... read more

Hey everyone, Just got back from Essen. Went with Mama, Papa, and Marina to watch The Phantom of the Opera (theater production, not the movie). It was sooooooo good. It was neat too, to hear it all in German instead of English. What a great night it was. I love the music and seeing it live was definitely a different experience than watching the movie. (Although the movie is also very good, so I would recommend watching it if you haven't) Other than tonight I haven't been up to much except getting ready to leave for Kenya. As you can see I'm moved back up to Stockum. Fri. night (my last night in Trier) I made dinner for friends. It was nice spending the last night with them just kicking back... It was a fun and ... read more

I can't believe another year has gone by. It's already 2006 and I definetely started it off on the right foot. =) I was going to go to Muenster with Caro and Sophie to celebrate with some of Carlo's (Sophie's boyfriend) friends. But we found out Thur. that the party we were going to go to was 21 and up! In Germany!! Never expected that. It kinda stunk and it was to late to get tickets to other parties going on in Muenster. So, we didn't do that. We went to Arnsberg (a city about 20-30 min. from Sundern) instead. It was still a blast. =) Caro, Sophie and I drove to Carlo's place early to get everything ready for dinner. We were having Raclette, so we had to get all the different toppings ready. Sophie ... read more

Just got back from Juli's sister's house. They live in Stockum and Juli was babysitting her little niece, Louisa tonight, so I went over to hang out. Louisa is soooo cute. It was the first time I had seen her. She was supposed to go to bed around the time that I got there, but she was so excited that Juli and I were there, so that didn't happen. She has sooo full of energy. =) We played together a bit. Then she ran around the room and was just a very happy baby until we put her to bed about and hour later. We tucked her into her crib and then left her screaming and crying. Juli and I both felt soo bad. I hate leaving babies crying, but she eventually fell asleep. Juli and ... read more

Went to Oma Imgard's (Papa's mom) last night for a game night with the cousins. She invited us all over. Lotta, Maike, and Jan were also there. It was a pretty fun night. Had pizza (always a good thing = ) We played "Ligretto" first. It's a very fast card game. Each player recieves a deck of cards with a different color on the back. They lay four cards in front of them face up and thirty of their cards in a deck face down with the top card turned over. They then flip over three cards over from the pile in their hand. Only the top of one can be used to play. The cards have the numbers 1-10 and are different colors (red, yellow, green, and blue). Cards are then layed in the middle ... read more
