Völklingen Ironworks is by most people seen as having less aesthetic value than Zollverein Coal Mine.

It is a bit of a climb up the stairs to reach that level. But once up there the views of the steelworks is quite rewarding.

Much of Völklingen Ironworks is like a big maze with walkways going in various directions and in various levels.

Industrial pasts
We find industrial design very interesting but have never thought to visit facilities like this when travelling. I'm glad these sites are getting another life - large scale restoration and repurposing makes me very happy :)

Supersized faucet

"the most beautiful coal mine in the world".
and a stunning Supersized Faucet to boot. Germany is well known as a manufacturing giant so only fitting that they keep such sites as museums when their use is expended. Great blog & love this pic!!!

Industrial Beauty
Very interesting Ake. I imagine such huge industrial sites are not automatically on people's sightseeing agendas, but I can certainly see how they would be fascinating. Nice to step off the typical tourist trail for a while 😊

World heritage sites draw people
Since both sites are world heritage sites I assume make a lot of people go there. But you are right in that many of them probably normally wouldn't visit such sites
