Today was a glorious weather day. Blue skies all around. It was also my last day in Berlin before I had to leave in the late afternoon to catch an overnight train to Slovenia. I had already been to Berlin before so I wasn't all that interested in visiting any of the tourist sites, however neither Andy or MK had been to Berlin before so they were keen to check some of the sites out. This meant that I ended up in the morning hitting some of the more typical tourist sites of Berlin. And just had the best time doing it.
First of all we headed off to the Potsdamer Platz to take a look at the site where Hitlers bunker used to be. We had a little bit of trouble trying to locate the road that it was on as every street sign that we could see seemed to have the name Potsdamer Platz and there were no actual street names. While we were trying to work out which way to go we stumbled across a set up on the side of the road that was sections of the old wall with a fake checkpoint set up. At
this checkpoint were some young men dressed up in uniform who, for the princely sum of 2 euros, would stamp your passport with all of the old Berlin checkpoint stamps that were used during the cold war, with todays date on them. It as AWESOME. So I now have a series of eight stamps in my New Zealand passport from each of the old occupied territories of Berlin. After collecting our stamps and taking some photos of the old portions of the wall we continued on our way to try and find the location of Hitlers bunker. We think that we foudn it in the end although it is a little hard to tell as there are no signposts or anything to indicate where it is as apparently the Germans don't want to make a big deal out of it, or turn it into a martyring point or anything like that.
From the Potsdamer Platz we caught the U -Bahn to meet up with Jen and MK at Alexanderplatz. Specifically we were to meet up with them at the World Time Clock, however this proved a little elusive for us all to find, so although we were all to
meet up at 1pm, we didn't finally manage to find each other until 1:30. Upon our successful reunion we headed to grab some lunch. I have discovered during my time here in Berlin that the Germans have the best food, as well as the most enormous portions. I am very surprised that all germans are not the size of a small house as with the size of the portions that they serve up they really should be absolutely enormous. After finishing lunch I had to head off to the Haptbanhoft to catch my train to Lake Bled, Slovenia where I am due to spend the next few days. So this blog entry is being written whilst on an frightfully efficient German train wending its way to Munich, where I will switch trains for my onwards journed to Slovenia.
