Today was the last day of the Baltics Eastern Europe tour with Intrepid. We started the day nice and early by meeting Andy (our tour leader) in the reception of the hotel at 6am. Unfortunately when we woke up this morning we discovered that we had woken up into the middle of a rather large thunderstorm, complete with window shattering thunder and a torrential downpour. This meant that we weren't really looking forward to the 15 minute walk to the tram stop. However we made trip to the train station without getting too wet and managed to catch the 7:23 train from Warsaw to Berlin. The train ride was uneventful. However the train itself was heavenly in comparison to the trains that we had to catch from Lithuania to Warsaw. This train had a dining cart and even had a little man who came around and sold drinks from a trolley, I managed to get to cups of hot water, which the made the cute trolley look at me rather strangely, but he also gave me the water for free which was lovely.
When we arrived into Berlin the weather was just delightful, especially compared to Warsaw. After checking into
our hotel Andy and I headed back off to the train station to book some train tickets for our onwards travel. I got rather a large surprise when I found out that my train ticket to Slovenia was going to cost 170 Euro. I was expecting the ticket to cost around 70 Euro so the actual cost was a bit of a shock. However I happily paid for my ticket and tomorrow I will be off for a long winded journey to Slovenia.
Following the expedition to the train station we headed off to take a look at the Reichstag and the events that were happening around there today. Apparently May 23rd 2009 is the 60th annivarsary of the Federation of the German Republic ( or something similar) so most of the strasse between the Bradenburg Tour and the Victory Column was closed off and there was a bit of a large celebration. There were 3 or 4 stages ( at either ends of the street) and into between there were hundreds and hundreds of stalls. There were beer stalls, and sausage stalls and more beer stalls, and then some more sausages and then there were slightly more random
stalls like face paintings for the kids, and climbing walls and one of my favourites was the firemans stall where they started a fire and let the kids put it out. They also had a game where you had to shoot the water from the fire house through some holes in the fire engine. Fun. Another cool thing that we saw was the german flag dancing, although one of the girls did drop her flag at one point in the dance. That didn't make her very popular as she was leading the dance.
After spending quite a bit of time at what was basically an enormous festival, we had to head back towards our hotel so we could meet up with the group for dinner (as it was our final night and also Glen's B'day). We had a great dinner at the restaurant just down the road from the hotel. The meal portions were just collosal!
