Munich, I love visiting this city. This actually was more of a feel good stop for me. Meaning, I am very comfortable here with location, transit system, food. I knew I would be travelling to different areas of Europe this year, and I needed that calmness of being confident and experienced with my travel. Munich does this for me. Actually this time, I did not do a whole lot in Munich. I arrived, found my hostel and just chilled out. I went to the Hofbrauhaus to get me some dinner and listen to the music. Now when you visit the Hofbrauhaus, you know when you walk in the door that you probably are in for a treat. Every time I have been, the place is just packed, and the band start to kick it up and play. The food and breverage is being taken from table to table to table. The pretzel boys and girls are walking around in their lederhosen and Octoberfest dresses selling these huge pretzels and other ammenities for Octoberfest which started a week or so after I left. This is really a fun environment, and one of my favorite things.
I had told a couple of
people from work that we would meet up at the Hofbrauhaus, for they were in Germany on business, and they were going to be in Munich the same time as me. They actually called me while I was eating and enjoying the festivities, and we were able to meet up later in the evening. After a photo of us three together, we left the Hofbrauhaus, and I took them to Dachau Concentration Camp to look around. I have been to Dachau a couple of times in the past, and you really need several hours there to fully absorb and take in what you are witnessing, and the location you are actually at. Dachau was closed for the day, but we were able to get inside the main grounds and still just walk around. I still felt this eerie feeling while walking those long stretches where the prisoners used to have to line up for roll call. I tried my best to explain and tell my comrades of what I had learned there from my past couple of visits, but of course this was not as good as actually experiencing and reading the material for yourself.
We stayed at the
concentration camp fifteen to twenty minutes or so, and then we took a train to the Olympic Stadium. It too was closed, so we just went into a little local pub and sat around and talked for a bit. We made our way back to the center of town, bid each other adieu, and I go back to my hostel. I depart for another city in the morning time, and I wanted to assure I was packed up and ready to go.
Munich was again a lovely and terrific stop for me this year. I just love this city, and I hope to travel here agian some day.
