Hi Everyone,
So the media blackout lasted much less time than I expected so here is a summary of our last few days in Munich.
Our first full day in Munich and we got right into to sampling some Bavarian food and beer. After this we settled in for some actual site seeing were we promptly got onto a tour and got to see the large majority of the sights in the inner city which Include the original Hofbrau House, Royal Palace, The most expensive street in the world, Altepeter Kirsche and some other stuff. Lot of good stuff on this one. We did return to the Altepeter Kirsche to climb the tower which is very cheap considering most tower climbs we have done, only 1.50. 302 steps to the top and a panoramic view of all of Munich all the way to the Alps on a clear day, it wasn't, but non the less it was a very nice view. After deciding that we were much to cold it was back to the hotel for the first time.
In between the tour and visiting a few more sights we reheated for the first time and went back
out to see the English Gardens and anything else we could fit on along the way. We did stumble across some bizarre tribute to Michael Jackson which had been plastered over a statue for a legitimate person. Either way we had a laugh and moved on. The Gardens were incredibly large and due to our time constraints and the bitter cold whether we didnt have much of chance to explore them well. They begin just out of the town centre and continue fairly straight right out of the city forming a number of other parks and recreation areas. The main centre piece was the Chinese Pagoda which looked like a sad Bavarian rip of off an actual Chinese Pagoda. It did look nice all lit up though. Other than this we headed back to our hotel for our next leg.
After our tour of the gardens and re-reheating ourselves at our hotel we headed back out for some more Bavarian food. We ended up going to a resteraunt were we got some reasonably traditional food and very cheap beer. All beer in Munich is amazing. This pretty much wrapped up our night so we spent some time organising what
we might do the next day.
We decided that today we would take the tour to the Dachau Memorial which is for the Former Dachau Concentration Camp. Without going into specific detail the whole experience was an incredibly sobering ordeal. Personally I found the whole experience both fascinating and terryfing at the same time. This is largely due to the details provided by our guide, as well as the very uncomfortable and unique experience of standing inside the gas chamber and crematorium that remain in original condition on the site. The temperature today was around -5 during the time we were outside and the fact that it was not mid winter and the prisoners of these camps were given limited clothing starts to give you a picture of what these places were like, a very limited picture mind you. I will leave the review at that other than saying that I would recommend anyone else visiting Munich to take sometime to visit the Memorial site.
To finish on a lighter note we are heading to Switzerland tomorrow and are looking forward to some more relaxation time and hopefully seeing and jumping in some more snow.
Bye
