Amber's Journal:
Well, today actually turned out to be fairly laid back. We slept in a little, then ate breakfast. I don't think I've mentioned this yet but European breakfasts tend to consist of meat (like deli-sliced ham, salami, etc) and slices of cheese (usually white cheeses), bread (some sweet, some rye, some rock hard), yogurt, granola, and juice. Sometimes there is fruit, at one place there was even salad. It's definitely different from breakfast in the states but I like it. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE here drinks coffee or tea with breakfast and look at us like we are crazy when we say we don't want any. We got to be friends with a girl named Hannah from Bosnia who worked at the B&B. She was super cute and fun and we exchanged email addresses. The sun was out and the clouds and fog had lifted a little so we took a few pictures and left for Munich. When we got there we went straight to Dachau and spent a couple of hours touring the concentration camp. They had a very informative museum that we walked through and we were also able to see the crematorium. It is so
sad to think of the inhumanity and the hardness of peoples' hearts that caused such a horrible tragedy. It is truly impossible to really comprehend. I was glad we were able to have that experience today. By the time we got back to the city and got checked into our hotel it was too late to go to the Deutches Museum, which was something we really wanted to do. I felt bad especially for Preston because it was the second thing today that we couldn't do that he was really excited about. We had planned to visit Hitler's "Eagle's Nest" near Salzburg but it doesn't open for two more days. I was bummed too cuz it would have been really cool to see. We also heard about a place called the BMW World which is supposed to be cool but it was too late for that too. We might try tomorrow morning. Anyways, we ended up just walking to Old Town Munich. There is a huge pedestrian walkway lined with stores that leads down to the Marienplatz, which I think is kind of the town center. The streets were a little more exciting that Salzburg but not nearly as cool
as Prague. There were a couple of churches and cool buildings but nothing super exciting and there didn't seem to be much else to do. We ate dinner at a restaurant next to the big church and strolled home through a pretty park. Munich is a huge city and I'm sure if we had more time here there would be lots of cool stuff to do. I am really grateful to be on this trip with my wonderful husband. He is so patient and sweet with me. I have been tired and my feet have been sore so I've been kind of a whiner and not as much fun as usual but he is still so nice to me and always trying to make me smile. I love him so much.
Preston's Journal:
Ok, now I can write about today... the clouds cleared a bit this morning so we got a better look at the Alps. Breakfast was very good, and the owner lady was very nice to us. Hana (the girl from yesterday) came just before we left so we got to say goodbye and we gave email addresses so we could write a little. She's really the
only person we've gotten to know much, and it's cool. We then drove to Munchen (or Munich). North of Munchen is Dachau concentration camp memorial. We spent a couple hours there (don't do the audioguides, just read the signs). Like Buchenwald, it was a very neat, yet sobering experience. We didn't make it downtown with enough time left to go to anything else before it closed, so we went to see old-town Munchen. There are tons of shops, and it was much more crowded here than other places we've been. But still, it was neat seeing the buildings and all the people. We had a nice dinner, then meandered back to the hotel. Not a real exciting day, but still part of a wonderful experience.
