During the past week or so there has been a lot of unrest in France over the Government’s plan to raise the retirement age. As part of the demonstrations the oil refinery workers have gone on strike resulting in a fuel shortage. We have managed to keep our tank topped up with diesel and hope we have enough to get us home, but time will tell. Hopefully the fishermen will not block the channel ports.
Today we drove 100k west to Carnac, the most important prehistoric site in Europe. Its alignments of over 2,000 menhirs (standing stones) stretch for over 4k and date from at least 5,700 BC. It was a unique sight with the stones covering such a large area. Unfortunately they have been fenced off to prevent erosion, but at it was low season we were able to gain access to some areas.
The night was spent at an aire overlooking the sea on the narrow Quiberon peninsular which stretches south 15k from Carnac.
