Chalons-en-Champagne

Chalons-en-Champagne is een erg oude stad. Ze is al bekend in het jaar 20 vóór Christus. Het werd een belangrijke plek omdat hier de Via Agrippa (een oude Romeinse weg, aangelegd in die tijd, door Frankrijk richting de Noordzee) de rivier de Marne kruiste. Daarmee werd het een centrum van handel, een van de eerste in het huidige Frankrijk. Het is nog steeds een belangrijk centrum van handel, o.a. van graan.

Chalons-en-Champagne is a very old town. It was already known in 20 BC. It became an important spot because the Via Agrippa (an old Roman road, built during that time, through Franse to the North Sea), crossed the river Marne here. That made it into an important trade centre, one of the first in what we now call France. It still is an important centre of trade, of grain amongst others.

Kathedraal / Cathedral
Chalons heeft 3 grote kerken in het centrum. Dit is de kathedraal. Zij is in de 13e - 17e eeuw gebouwd. Daarvoor stond hier een kerk uit de 12e eeuw. De kathedraal heeft nog glas in lood ramen uit de 13e eeuw. Ze werd in de eerste en tweede Wereldoorlog wel beschadigd, maar kon gerestaureerd worden. Chalons has 3 large churches in the centre of the city. This is the cathedral. It was built in the 13th - 17th century. Before that there was a church on this location from the 12th century. The cathedral still has stained glass windows from the 13th century. She was damaged in both the first and second world wars, but could be restored. Venetie / Venice
We hebben ook een boottocht gemaakt door de stad over een zijrivier van de Marne. Chalons wordt ook wel het ‘Sprankelend Venetië’ genoemd, met een verwijzing naar de Champagne streek.
We also made a boat trip through town on a side river of the Marne. Chalons is also called the ‘Sparkling Venice’ with a reference to the Champagne region.

Tunnel
Part of the boat trip went through a 300m tunnel where the city was built on top of the river. While we sailed through this a light snow was displayed on the ceiling of the tunnel depicting scenes from the town’s history. That was very special.
Een deel van de boottocht ging door een 300m lange tunnel, waar de stad over de rivier is heengebouwd. Terwijl we door de tunnel heen voeren, werd er een lichtshow op het plafond geprojecteerd met beelden over de historie van de stad. Dat was heel bijzonder.

Kasteel / Castle
Aan het eind van de tunnel staat het kasteel van Chalons dat vroeger de ingang van de stad via deze rivier bewaakte.
