Quite a nice morning but colder on the way home as we were against a cool north easterly wind. Today's loop was Chipping via Cow Ark and Leagram and home via Chaigley and the Pigeries.

Our virtual journey would be leaving Chanoy, on the canal, again, for most of the day but the path was now gradually becoming rougher and more overgrown. We decided to carry on and see what happened. The path came to an abrupt halt as the canal disappeared into a tunnel and we had to carry the bikes up the steps to the roof of the tunnel. The tunnel marks the summit level and is 4820 metres long, and runs almost exactly underneath the source of the Marne. From the top of the tunnel is was back onto the road, at Balesmes sur Marne and then the last few miles over rolling hills to Villegusien le Lac.

Photo shows looking back onto the canal from the roof of the tunnel where the path ended.
