Hello everyone! Here is Grenoble it has been rainy for the past couple days, which is a first because usually it is nice and sunny! This weekend has been pretty quiet for me, I went out with some friends on Friday night and on Saturday I went skating with some other exchange people which was fun. Courses are going well; I have a midterm in my economics class in a couple of weeks so I will have to work hard for that. I also have a couple of presentations due this month, so you see November is going to be a busy month! I will now fill you in on what has been going on the last half of October. I told you that I was going on a weekend trip in the mountains with a ... read more

Hello Everyone! I am more than a month into my experience in France right now and I can truly say that I am loving my new life. School is going pretty well, I can understand the teachers and am arriving at taking notes at the same time as listening which is very difficult for a non French student to accomplish! I am starting to work hard and study, especially for my third year economics class which is pretty difficult. We even have to do an oral presentation in class sometime this semester which will be very frightening for us exchange people! I am determined to do well however! I also have been doing a lot of trips during the weekends with a group called CUEF, which organizes activities for the exchange students. They are really well ... read more

Hello Everyone! I am writing this to you from my little room at Grenoble. I have been here for less than two weeks, and already it feels like my home. When I arrived in Grenoble with my Belgium family I was blown away by just how beautiful it was. The whole city is surrounded by mountains, all different shapes soaring towards the sky. City center is amazing as well. Most of it is just for pedestrians to walk, all the buildings are old, and there are lots of green places and parks as well as fountains. Not to mention all the restaurants and shopping there is! My University is part of a campus where two other universities make their home as well. It is a huge campus, filled with very different and sometimes bizarre buildings. I ... read more

It was amazing to witness the Tour de France in action at the time trial in Grenoble and even more incredible to witness Australian sporting history as Cadel Evans became the first Australian to ever win the Tour de France with a huge performance in Grenoble to smash the Schleck brothers! After spending much of my work day on friday following stage 19 of the tour, we flew to Lyon and picked up our car to drive to Les Duex Alpes, quite a large, slightly tacky ski village in the French Alps, which was quite close to where stage 19 had earlier finished. Thankfully I had an automatic car with GPS to assist me driving on the wrong side of the road. The road up the mountain was pretty hair raising at midnight, but more amazing ... read more

Le Tour? What, was that yesterday? Shoot! Forgot all about it... Just Kidding. What a day! It will be very hard to capture the thrill of the day's events but I will try...We left the house early - 8am. It was just over an hour to Grenoble on the highways but once we got off the main highways and on the mountain roads the driving was slower (switch-backs) so it took over an hour to get to where we finally stopped and parked the car. By the way, we passed HUNDREDS of cyclists making their way by bike to watch the tour! We missed a critical turn going up the mountain and kept following the lineup of cars. But we did eventually find a place to park 3/4 of the way up this mountain (which turned ... read more

This week was a very demanding week, workwise...I worked a day and a half! We had Armistice Day (Veterans' Day for you Americans) off on Wednesday, but I normally have Wednesdays off, so that was a bit of a letdown. I stayed home Thursday due to a nasty stomach bug that I can only assume came from my students and their grubby little hands. I had previously arranged to have Friday off (I was able to make up the hours a few weeks ago) so that I could catch an early train to Grenoble. Elizabeth, a friend I've known since first grade, is studying in Bologna, Italy this semester, and Grenoble seemed like a good halfway point to meet up. Italy apparently doesn't have too many high speed trains, though, so she had a really long ... read more

Wow, a great couple of days there in Grenoble. The city itself wasn’t all that special, but the mountains surrounding the city are awesome. Yesterday I had the pleasure of hiking to the highest peak around the city and I think it was really the highlight of the trip for me so far. I love doing athletic things and I love being in Nature. I really should make an effort to go hiking or camping more often. Open invitation for anybody who wants to come with me. The hike was actually less challenging than I was expecting. I think I overestimated how fatigued my legs would be and underestimated how good of shape I’m in. I was definitely going at quite a faster pace than the signpost estimations, and that included stopping to take pictures. At ... read more

Friday, June 19th At the beginning of this journey I wondered how we would handle the longer than normal vacation. Now that we are almost half way done I am surprised at some of the things I have discovered. It seems that 2 weeks is the right amount of time to unwind and finally relax. Being gone for 2 weeks is like getting a deep tissue massage instead of a back rub. You begin to remember what life was like before constant access to email, the internet, the news, fighting traffic and paying bills. As corny as it sounds, it is nice to have the time to stop and simply hear the birds sing. The difference in countries and cultures makes you think differently about yourself and your values and you come away with a new ... read more

Thursday, June 18th About an hour To the north of Grenoble, just past the Chambery, is a small city near the Swiss border called Annecy. It's only 30 minutes from Geneva, and it sits on the edge of a mountain lake with very clear water. Annecy is like a little Venice or Amsterdam, complete with its own set of canals, a medieval prison, and a castle on the hill overlooking the town. Pedestrian bridges are sprinkled throughout the quaint streets and flowers sprout from the windows of the buildings and the sides of the bridges. As soon as we arrived we headed for the main canal to find some lunch. The main canal which is lined with shops and restaurants and is an easy place to take a stroll or enjoy a leisurely lunch which is ... read more

Wednesday, June 17th The morning started out pretty funny. Tiffany decided to take a walk around Brignoud with one of the girls since we weren't going into Grenoble until later that day. A few minutes later she came back and I asked her what was wrong, why did she come back so early ? Tiffany said she was worried she might get a ticket for disturbing the peace. I was confused naturally. She laughed and said that one of the guys in town had whistled at her and waved, apparently appreciating the new shorts she had purchased the day before. Embarrassed but also suddenly full of herself, Tiffany headed back to the house with a giant story to tell. Cool Meter Takes a Hit Burned twice already by the sun, I was determined not to let ... read more
