St Remy-de-Provence
Sunshine in the square near the Town Hall We thought we might need to seek alternative accommodation for our visitors but we are all happy staying in the one place and are still getting on well here.
During our barge/bike trip, I had missed the ride to St Remy-de-Provence due to an injury the day before so today we decided to make a trip in that direction. As usual it was a beautiful day so we set off fairly early as we also intended to revisit Les Baux-de-Provence & Pont du Gard with our visitors. The main tourism season is over now but parking is still difficult in many areas. Today we were pretty lucky to find a space not too far from the sites we wanted to visit in each area.
In the old centre of St Remy after purchasing some delicious pastries, Chery slipped on the step coming out of the patisserie. We were worried she might have damaged a previously broken leg but luckily she escaped with some minor grazes and a slightly twisted ankle. She managed to walk around the interesting streets of the village (native town of Nostradamus & temporary residence of Van Gogh) reasonably well. We visited the lovely church but

Ceiling of the church in St Remy were disappointed that a gigantic carnival had set up residence in the main town square outside the church, spoiling the view. We decided Les Baux would be a good place for lunch and we weren’t disappointed. A lovely restaurant overlooking the magnificent limestone formations provided us with a delicious lunch at a reasonable price. After checking out the major attractions in the village, we headed to Pont du Gard, the aqueduct bridge built by the Romans in 19BC, and looking magnificent in the late afternoon sun. I decided to do the climb to the top of the bridge leaving the others to relax down below…it was steep but well worth the effort!
