Today wwe drove from Andorra north through the very beautiful Pyrenees via Encamp and Pas de la Case to France and then workred our way towards Marseille . We didn't plan on the May 1 holiday and there were a lot of campers on the road. I didn't know the camping business was so strong in France with tenters and a lot of small Camper Vans and small motor homes.
The drive through the Pyrenees is a very nice drive through some spectacular mountain valleys and passes ( some with snow ) as we worked our way back to the Mediterranean and the city of Perpignan. We spent a few very windy hours here and continued on to a night stop. We stayed one night in a small city called Bezier near the coast. The country side here is beautiful with the vineyards, wheat fields and orchards.
Friday morning we headed north to Millau and the now famous Millau Viaduct, a spectacular 2.5 Km long, 245 Meter high at the deck. ( That's 750 Feet for us older guys ) , 7 tower cable stayed bridge that crosses
a large valley above the beautiful little city of Millau. The trip to Millau is a nice drive and the bridge viewing is worth the time spent. We got some great pictures. Check it out at - http://picasaweb.google.com/TravelswithTAG - After the bridge we spent a short time in the city of Millau. This is a very nice place in a big valley and of course in the spring all is very green.
From Millau we drove back towards the coast for a one night stay in Marseille. Marseille one of the oldest cities in France and there is a beautiful port. From a tourist point of view not a lot to see. Lots of activity around the port with restaurants and tourist places. Our hotel was a short walk to the port and we enjoyed a nice, but expensive, meal at a local port restaurant. The specialty here is bouillabaisse so of course I had to try some. Very tasty but 35. Euros for a bowl of fish soup is a little much. It was good but I've had better in N'awlins, USA.
Our next day, following a walk about the port area, was a very easy drive
from Marseille to Nice via Cannes. In hind site we wished we had spent a day or so in Cannes as it is is truly a beautiful place. The port area is a great place with all the big ( I mean BIG ) Yachts of the rich and famous. The place is very busy this time of year with the city getting ready for the Film Festival. We will come back here someday for sure.
We arrived in Nice ( one of our favorite places in the world ) and it is as beautiful as we remembered it. We stayed at a well located hotel in the center of town and spent the afternoon on a short walk around the shopping area near the hotel. We are looking forward to the 3 night stay we have planned for Nice.
