So much for a short, flat ride into Montpellier along the Mediterranean coastline. Whilst I did see the sea for a short while, it was unfortunately brief amid 95 miles or so of rather unpleasant roads into a fairly persistant breeze. This won't mean too much to too many, but for about 15 miles or so I was riding with a 34/21 on the flat (and struggling), I think I slightly pulled a muscle in my neck as I was cursing the wind at the top of my voice. On another day it all may have been grand, you can't get lucky all the time I guess. On the plus side, I am about 5 miles ahead of schedule owing to some sort of conference in Montpellier which saw every hotel in town booked out. From ... read more

Dear all, My life in Cambridge is over so it is high time for an update of my travel blog. The past few months have been tough, but now I can look back at my year in Cambridge with great satisfaction. The third term in Cambridge (Easter Term) is exam term, which means that one has to study 12-16 hours a day, seven days a week for eight consecutive weeks. Fortunately I had some relaxing intermezzos with Sebastian, my parents and my brothers visiting me. Not much else happened during this period because I was in the library all other days. The results came out a few weeks after the sitting of the exams, and I received them with rather mixed feelings. My grades were OK, but I unfortunately missed out on a first class mark ... read more

So today was my big day to check out Montpellier as it is my only full day here. I started by just wandering around town for a couple hours looking for nothing in particular but still seeing a lot. Last blog I mentioned I would talk about the city so here it is. It is fantastic, one of my favorite places on this trip so far. It only has about 200,000 there and it feels like less. The city is pretty condensed and has just a friendly and lively ambience 24/7. A lot of this can be contributed to the university here and all the internationals it attracts. While the city has no real defining monument the downtown is made up of a bunch of 18th and 19th century buildings which have been well preserved. The ... read more

Disclaimer: I am typing this in an internet cafe in Montpellier on a french keyboard so I have to type slow thus a fairly weak blog which will be riddled with spelling errors. Bonjour. Had a fairly decent train ride up to Montpellier. Rode along the coast for a while on the way up so those were some pretty fantastic views. Was greeted at the station by Alice, a nice British girl who is friends with my host Anil and another CSer. Went back to her place so I could put my pack down so I could roam around town until Anil got off work. Showed me a bit around before she had to head off to take care of work. Spent a little bit of time roaming around before stopping for lunch. The food here ... read more

And so the journey continued... The train from Stuttgart to Paris only took 4 hours - this was our introduction to the amazing train system in France! All the TGV trains are super speedy, and with our passes super cheap too! Very exciting after the doddery trans-siberian and all Europe's slow trains. Anyway we arrived in Paris with 40mins for the changeover, planning to metro-it quickly from the Gare de l'est to the Gare de Lyon, however without euro coins we had to queue for about 20mins to get to the ticket office, and with 15mins metro journey missed the connection. Even so, with 6 trains a day down to Montpellier we weren't too fussed, until we tried to reserve places and found out that the next trains were fully booked with people taking holidays, and ... read more

The grève has been going on since late January now. Sadly we've all gotten used to missing proffeseurs and the political propaganda on campus. You would think that it couldn't get any worse. But of course it did. The students have decided to rally alongside their teachers and take a stand against the government, and so things have gotten bad. It all started last Tuesday. After a nice relaxing lunch, a group of friends and I sat out on the grassy knolls to enjoy the weather and gaze upon an art exhibit. It was quiet, relaxing, and very enjoyable. Later we get word from a fellow American students that there is a gathering a Amphi Building A in which French students are yelling at professeurs and other students and are exclaiming that the university is officially ... read more

Sigh. So the greve continues, but on a smaller scale. This time it's just the students and the professors on strike. Luckily I only have one "French" (meaning that's it's a course at the University and not a specialised course for foreigners) class so I'm only missing out on one. And that professeur hates strikes so she will be sending us all of our work via email so that we don't fall too far behind with all of this craziness. France. Sometimes I just don't know what to say. It's never a dull moment, that's for sure. Saw my first ever TRULY French film at the theatres. I approved. But the French have skewed ideas as to the British life style. I'm sure that I can't really defend it, because I've never been to the U.K, ... read more

France is really really really special. I still don't get it, but I refuse to question it. Last Thursday was the National Greve, meaning National Strike. Most classes were canceled by teachers and students who went on strike against the government. It was impossible to get anywhere on public transportation because the roads were blocked off for at least three hours. I'm told that the Strike was for French workers who were angry at the current state of the economy and wanted the government to come in and intervene. Create more jobs and such. There were a lot of Anti-Sarkozy things and one group in the parade (because really, it was a big party) had a guilitine chopping off the heads of dolls for their visual. Yep yep yep. Still don't get how people not going ... read more
