I found
SHAKESPEARE & CO where I can stare at TOOONS of English books, but not buy, because the US prices are usually astronomically cheaper! Even still, it's a very magical place with a nice storefront and of course, lots of books. There are a couple I found that are cheap enough to buy, though everyone should know the last thing I need is more books. The store is right across the street from Notre Dame, and on the way, I found a cuuute few blocks of flower stands. Definitely the sort of things Lancaster needs! They sell gifts as well, so I'll be making a couple of trips back. The rest of the day was spent wandering pretty much aimlessly around the city, and that little adventure carried over into today. If you just change directions randomly, you're bound to find something you wouldn't have found otherwise, aka the AMERICAN STORE. Hello peanut butter!!
I should also add that it began to POUR so unexpectedly that evening! We saw the sky become ominously dark, and ran for the metro. When I came up the escalator at George V, everyone got poured on and started running for cover.
Read ALL the Books!
Stacked all the way to the ceiling! Thankfully for me, French people are decent enough to stop their cars and let you through on a red light. When I tried to share this experience with my host family, I definitely did not express myself well, and I think they thought I was just excited about the metro. "I got rained on as soon as I came up from the metro" became "I really like the metro!" No worries though, I'm here to learn......
Sunday
• Today I discovered how loud I am. Maybe I'm just so loud in comparison to softer-spoken French people. Maybe when the French walk down the street, they want to have quiet, private conversations with their walking partners. Moi, je suis FORTE. This is not going to change, Paris, sorry. When you get me started on something I love a lot (Lord of the Rings, anthropology, books) or requires lots of hand motions (everything), I get into it!
• I found a restaurant named "Chez Katy" which means "Katy's Place/Restaurant" or "in the house of Katy." It's Libyan/Moroccan cuisine, as far as I remember, but the picture may say otherwise.
• ANTHRO MUSEUM. MAYAN EXHIBIT. Can you say 15 euro for unlimited
access?? YES.
• I ate a pastry called "divorce." It was delicious, contrary to its name. There was also "religious chocolate" and "ancient baguette." I also can't say how they picked up "Croque Monsieur," though I can say it's the BEST way to make a ham&cheese sandwich.
• I need more Luna bars, and new shoes. It's ridiculous how much walking I've done in the past two days. This city is absolutely ginormous. Food is also pretty expensive here--we managed to find a 3-euro breakfast, but other than that, you have to really search for affordable cuisine. Monoprix, I think you and I will become great friends....
