We stuck to an earlier wake-up time today, and got out the door about 10:30. We headed to
Le musée Marmottan Monet. We got on the wrong 8 train (going the wrong direction), but we quickly adjusted our route on the fly and it ended up being a quicker path anyway. We arrived at La Muette stop shortly after 11:00, and after a short 10 minute walk we arrived at the museum. There was a short line to get into the museum, but the flow was fairly quick. We had some problems getting our coats/stuff checked in, but eventually got into the actual museum. No cameras were allowed inside the museum, and it took me about 2 hours to finish the very impressive exhibit. For $9 euro it was definitely worth the visit. After we all cleared the museum, we headed back into the actual village area for lunch. We checked a few places before settling on La Rotonde.
Lunch was good, but we got seated in the very front of the restaurant in this little cubby hole that got extremely hot. Only after we were nearly finished our meal did the waiter open the window to let a little cooler air in.
In all, though, it was a good meal. When we finished we did a little window shopping in the area before heading back to the metro.
After a few train rides/changes we ended up at the Anvers station below the
Basilique du Sacré-Cœur. A short 5 minute walk in the flow of the masses lead us to the foot of the Cathedral grounds. Had some brief photo opportunities near the foot of the steps, then began the climb to the top. A large mass of people were gathered near the top to watch a couple street performers. We kind of broke up at this point. I made the top, and went in for the short 5 minute walk through the Cathedral (no photos inside). When I had finished we regrouped out front, then walked around the perimeter of the cathedral which emerged into the small district called Montmartre. It was a touristy area but had lots of little shops that we checked out. The streets wound around and came through a classic little artist coop where artists were actively painting/drawing, and you could view and purchase their works. It was pretty cool, but a little pricey. We ended up making our
way back down the hill through the winding streets and found our way back to the Anvers station, and caught our sequence of trains back to the Chemin Vert, and finally back to the apartment.
We hadn't planned a nice dinner yet - they've all been very good, but just stumbled upon more than actually planned. I had a list of restaurants tagged (that I'd been researching throughout the week, and finally decided to make the reservation. Bruce made the call, and we setup a reservation for 9:00 at Au Bascou. It was a short metro ride (5 stops / 2 trains) and we emerged from the tunnels slightly disoriented. We asked directions a few times, but ended up finding the small restaurant - and only seconds away from our table getting given away. They had 1 English menu, so with the help of the waiter we were able to place our orders. Brandee ordered a beef in a pot dish, Charlene and Bruce both ordered the Truffle Raviolis, and I ordered the Pigeon - hey, gotta try something authentic. We ordered the house wine, and enjoyed the quant (and definitely local) hangout.
Our food arrived, and it
was awesome - as usual. The pigeon was surprisingly rich and flavorful, and not at all what I expected. I skipped eating the foot though - Charlene says that's for show anyway, and they probably don't eat it either. After dinner we headed back to the apartment and enjoyed a final glass of wine before heading off to bed. It didn't seem like a full day, but it really was - lots of walking. Tomorrow is our last day in Paris, and we're trying to fit in the final few things that we want to do....
More to come...
