Our Fabulous Hostesses
Sylvia and Mylène making dinner :) Well, I'm updating from a few weeks back, but better late than never.
This was quite a nice weekend. First, Sylvia and Mylène, the two French girls who studied at the UA last fall, invited Fiona, Sarah, Alix and me over Friday night. Sarah unfortunately wasn't feeling well and didn't make it.
Sylvia picked us up at the dorms and we picked up another friend of hers by the train station then headed to her apartment. Another friend, Amelie who is also in our translation class, got a little lost but Sylvia went out and found her.
Then we had a good time playing spoons (a game they enjoyed at UA) and Jungle Rumble (or something similarly titled) which is a popular game here with a totem in the center and everyone goes around the circle turning over a card and if they have the same pattern on two of them who ever gets the totem first gives the other their cards. The goal is to get rid of all your cards and it is difficult because the symbols on the cards are often very similar but not exactly the same.
Then we made crêpes! Well, Sylvia
and Mylène did and they were delicious. I had a peanut butter and nutella one with some whipped peanut butter Sylvia brought back from Arkansas. YUM. We also had homemade whipped cream, ice cream, sugar and jam for toppings. And as you are supposed to we drank them with cidre, which translates to hard cider in American though it's not exactly the same (apparently much to the disappointment of French exchange students who want to throw crêpe parties in the US).
Also had some malibu and coke while we played cards which the French students thought was just the funniest drink combination they'd ever heard of. They looked really uncertain trying it.
Sylvia had the U2 dvd from the Milan concert and we watched that while we played games. What a great concert!
This was also the start of Fiona's text-stalker conversation.
During dinner she got a call from a guy who thought he was calling his girl friend. She told him wrong number and he sent an angry text going "This isn't funny, call me back". Fiona eventually turned off her phone since he kept texting.
After that weekend she didn't hear anything for
Wii Bowling
Fiona did quite well. 10 days and then he called 2 more times and so Fiona sent a text in English saying "Look, I've told you before I'm not your girlfriend, I'm an English student you have the wrong number." Well, he writes back "Can I practice my English with you then?"
Well, Fiona had to use up some credit that was soon to expire so she said sure whatever. Then the guy (Oliver, it turns out) asks her age. She replies 22 and gets a message back which, with the aid of the dictionary, we learned meant "I want to make you come". Followed by a series of classy messages such as I'm watching porn, the name of the porn, etc. until she turned off her phone. This was apparently not the response Oliver was hoping for as when she turned it back on the next morning the most recent message said You little slut.
Classy, eh? Though as Fiona said "Well, now I know. If I ever want to impress a French guy its apparently a great turn on to say 'I'm 22'."
SO back to the crêpe party. After we thoroughly stuffed ourselves on sugary goodness we played
more games and then tried out the Wii. In case you were wondering, the Wiimote is a feminin noun in French whereas the Nunchucks are masculin.
That was fun too! We did bowling and boxing. The boxing was quit a workout! I couldn't really tell where I was aiming or if I'd got a hit... I think Alix and I just frantically and randomly punched the air. But man if they weren't like 500 dollars I'd get one and then I'd have ridiculously toned arm muscles.
We got in late but Fiona and I had wanted to get away, so we had planned a Saturday in Rennes and had already made plans to meet Lindsay (a friend I know through Megan who is studying in Rennes this semester) at the train station. So we were up bright and early to catch our train.
The weather was absolutely magnificent! Warm and sunny and kept us from being too tired. We met Lindsey at a bar in the station called Pizzburg and then took the metro into town. We had a great time just wandering the beautiful centre ville. Some beautiful architecture and a lovely flower market tucked into
a little plaza completely with accordian musicians and people on bikes and old women pushing little shopping bags.
Like most French towns I've seen, it's right on a river which we had a nice walk along as well. As always there was a beautiful cathedral and then we took a walk through a nice park.
We were disappointed to find that the Funky Munkey bar was not open until later, but still got a photo of the funny name.
We had Chinese for lunch and I had a really good duck with litchis. MMMmmm.
Then we sat outside at a cafe (the weather was that beautiful! Jackets off and everything!) and just visited for probably at least an hour which was great fun. Then Fiona and I said au revoir and headed back to Le Mans. We got back in with the best intentions of taking naps, but cruelly neither of us could fall asleep so we ended up watching some DVDs.
Sunday was also beautiful. Sarah and Alix and I walked to the boulangerie about 15 min towards town that is open Sundays and got pastries. Mine was a peach and chocolate concoction and
we sat in the park which was full of people enjoying the warm weather and watched some kids play soccer and a little girl play catch with her dad (and much to Alix's amusement completely ignore the soccer ball when it got kicked over next to her).
I can't wait until this warm weather becomes the norm and not the exception. As I write this though, it looks quite sunny outside. I may have to trek down to the boulangerie for some bread so I can finish my cheese up before I depart for Sheffield.
