After breakfast, we were picked up at 10am for a visit to the Kopara Reindeer farm. It was minus 6 degrees, with a windchill of minus 9, so we wore our hired ski jumpsuits and boots. Our guide gave us a lot of information about the area and reindeer. He collected some lichen for us to feed the reindeer with. In Lapland, there are more reindeer than people (200,000 reindeer and only 180,000 people). He was of Lapis origin, rather than Finnish or a Sami (native). At the end of the tour, we were taken up to see all the huskies (both Siberian and Alaskan) in their pens. There is no snow at the moment so they are allowed out of their cages to run around for exercise. When there is snow, they get enough exercise ... read more

It gets light very late in the arctic so we had a lazy morning in bed and went down to breakfast about 9:30am. Breakfast is buffet style and there is a section of cereals, breads and toasts with jam, some sort of unidentifiably porridge type mush, baby sausages and what looked like scrambled egg but tasted like baked custard… There were also croissants and several cheeses, cured meats, tomato, smoked salmon and cucumber to choose from. Following breakfast, we collected our clothes (ski jumpsuits and boots) and went back to the igloo to try them on for size. We didn’t think we needed them today so we put our own thermals and clothes on and went for a walk into the village. It is only a few hundred metres down the road and there is another ... read more

On Tuesday night, we stayed overnight at the Novotel at Heathrow airport so that we would be close to the terminal for our early morning flight. We were up just after 4am and the hotel taxi took us to terminal 3 at 5am for our first flight to Helsinki. We went into the Cathay Pacific lounge for some breakfast prior to our 7:30 flight. This first took almost 3 hours and we had some lovely views of southern Finland towards the end of the flight. There are a surprisingly large number of lakes and waterways in Finland. We had a transit of around 4 hours so we holed up in the Finnair lounge prior to our flight to Rovaniemi, which took 1 hr 20 mins. It gets dark in Finland around 3:30pm so we had a ... read more

For better or worse, the heatwave gripping much of Scandinavia abated just the day before my summit attempt of Halti Mountain in Finland. The mountain's summit is actually in Norway but the highest point in Finland is just short of the summit. Norway recently tried to redraw its border to give Finland the entire mountain but was denied by a constitutional technicality. Of course, with the heat dissipating came the rain. A lot of rain. One minute I was basking in the sun at Pihtsusjärvi hut, the wind whipping up from the hot south, the next minute the wind shifted from the north, as in the North Pole, definitely not hot. I managed to tag objective numero dos of the Scandinavia Peak Bagging Trilogy in ~3 hours from the hut and another 2½ return, pretty pedestrian ... read more

J’avais constaté que ... read more

The northern lights; does it get any better? Yes, it’s better when they’re visible! You could only actually see the picture I've posted via clever clogs use of your camera settings. When that was taken I was stood next to the photographer (thanks Bob) but I saw bugger all. Seeing the northern lights would have been the icing on the cake of our holiday, we didn’t see them, but it was a fantastic cake anyway. We went to Finnish Lapland, above the Arctic Circle, in December. We flew from Manchester to Helsinki to Ivalo, it was interesting to fly over Finland, as it was pretty desolate looking place in winter. We were picked up and driven to Lake Menesjärvi. On arrival at the hotel our driver took a moment to point out various locations in ... read more

I will share my experience in Levi divided in different topics: - My impression of Levi - What to do - what to wear - nightlife 1: My impression of Levi: I didn’t come to Levi to do downhil skiing. Even though it’s a huge skiing area for Finnish standards, it’s very small compared to the resorts in the alps. Levi slopes also don’t have alpine amazing views. I came to do things you cannot do in the Alps. And there are lots of such things! The most important thing I noticed in Levi is that it is very commercialized ('touristy'). The only other place I visited in Lapland was Ruka and Ruka was more 'laid back'. Ruka didn’t have an airport and the Norwegian border is far away. Levi is full of 'package holiday' travellers, ... read more
