Left the hotel saturdaymorning at 6 o clock. Walked to the station. Even so early the prostitutes are alraedy or still in the streets. Took breakfast and checked the platform. 6.50 the train was leaving for Aalborg. I don t know why but it sounds like a spirit.Unfortunately my agent had forgotten to check if it was a train with reservation possibillities. I had no reservation. So in the 4 hours I was travelling in this train I had seven different seats. In Aaborg a coach with not enough seats was waiting to bring the remaining passengers to Hjoerring where I had to buy a ticket to Hirtshals almost the most northern point of Denmark. The train left half an hour later from platform 0.They have only two platforms in Hjoerring and found it possible more ... read more

Hi there.. So here we go. No turning back;) A warm welcome, from the cold and snowy Faroe Islands, to my first blog entry ever! At the moment I'm at home. I've just returned from a 4 weeks, más o menos, trip to Bolivia. For the next three months or so I'll just be hanging out here on the Islands - doing some "Travel in your own country", which is something I definitely haven't done enough of. In august I'll be off to South America for some time, first Brazil and then we'll see what happens from there.. Ok, enough about the future, I'll start with the past. That's always a safe place to start. The first blogs will be from the Bolivia trip and maybe some even older stuff.. Soooo enjoy, I'll see you around:) ... read more

The ferry from Iceland to the Faroe Islands didn´t get attacked by pirates. That´s ok, I´ve got another chance starting today when I sail from here to Norway! It was a somewhat boring trip. Unless you like spending upwards of $55 on dinner, there´s not even much to eat. Oh well, at least it was comfortable enough: the ferry Norrona is a car ferry / cruise ship / cargo carrier, so it has a bunch of luxury options on board, if you´ve got the money for them. I arrived in Torshavn, capital of the Faroes, Friday morning at 8:00am. It´s a nice city. Big enough to have most of the amenities you could want (otherwise you´d have to go to Norway / Iceland / Scotland / Denmark for everything!), small enough, with only 20,000-odd residents, to ... read more

Standing in the midst of some 8000-1000 inebriated Faroese at midnight last night, all of us belting out Faroese songs (me included), I realized I would have a very hard time explaining Olavsøka -- or St. Olaf's Day -- to anyone who had not witnessed it first hand. It is perhaps the most important festival in the Faroes, though only celebrated in Torshavn, the capital. What limited hotel and hostel space is available fills up months in advance, both with tourists and with Faroese traveling from other islands. Although St. Olaf's Day is technically just that, one day (July 29), the party started on Friday night and didn't really wrap up to the wee hours of today. It is a combination religious holiday (celebrating the arrival of Christianity to the islands) and political affair (politicians ... read more

Day 58: Monday 3rd. July 2006: Sunny with patchy cloud: Goodbye Iceland and here we come Faroes. Good flight and very green and mountains coming into the Faroes and from the airport to Torshavn. Well, we thought there were hills to walk down before, now it is mountains to climb as there is no bus service to the hostel but oh the view is spectacular out over the harbour, with horses and sheep in the fields around us. We did get a taxi from the harbour with cases to carry, but after a late buffet meal at the hotel by the hostel, it was about a 3 km walk to the nearest shop being at the Shell service station and then the 3 km walk back up the mountain. I must say we are fitter ... read more
