The island of Mykines: Puffins
Day 58: Monday 3rd. July 2006: Sunny with patchy cloud: Goodbye Iceland and here we come Faroes. Good flight and very green and mountains coming into the Faroes and from the airport to Torshavn. Well, we thought there were hills to walk down before, now it is mountains to climb as there is no bus service to the hostel but oh the view is spectacular out over the harbour, with horses and sheep in the fields around us. We did get a taxi from the harbour with cases to carry, but after a late buffet meal at the hotel by the hostel, it was about a 3 km walk to the nearest shop being at the Shell service station and then the 3 km walk back up the mountain. I must say we are fitter now than when we left home. We purchased a 4 day bus pass that allows us to go on all buses and ferries to the other islands.

Day 59: Sunny: We had a stroll around the town then caught a bus to Klaksvik and then a small bus (car) to Hvannasund on another island via tunnels, one in which "going" traffic had the right

way, "returning" traffic had to pull into invisible bays to let the going cars pass - rather scary. We and another couple were directed to the ferry - an old fishing boat with an old master - when a chap came along and said we were on the wrong ferry, get off and go to the other, which we did. There were about 24 people on board and off we went, in the wrong direction according to me. We were going down the waterway when the mate came around asking for money for tickets. I showed him the bus pass and he said that it was not valid on this trip. When Vera showed her pass as well the captain stopped the boat in the middle of nowhere and I thought we were about to be put off. Anyway, he had told us to get off the other ferry and we carried on with the bird watching tour and missed out on the island visit.
Worse yet, because we were on the wrong ferry we missed the last bus back to Klaskvik, fortunately the other couple were offered a lift and we said we were with them so had

a ride back. By this time it was late, freezing cold, everything was closed and we'd missed the bus so we asked at the police station if we could use their toilet. We sat out in the cold wind for an hour and half waiting for the bus for the long drive back to Torshavn and the walk up the mountain. Lucky it is daylight most of the time. All in all it was a good day and different and we travelled 75 kms by bus.

Day 60: Wednesday 5th July: Sunny: Another long drive by bus to the ferry. We are about to discover a ferry is not a ferry as we are used to - it is a method of water transport being a fishing boat of some description. We are on our way to MYKINES Island on a boat with only wind and wave protection on one side for the about 50km trip through rough seas. A beautiful island with a rough landing, steep paths, hills and Puffins. We climbed to the top of a hill where I was very brave lying down to look over the cliff edge. We took a lot of photos here

because the Puffins were absolutely fabulous and the scenery beautiful. Only 8 people live on the island and there are summer visitors. If the weather is bad you can get there or home again by hellicopter. Coming home the sea was really rough and some people got drenched but we were OK with our plastic raincoats wrapped around us. Another lovely different day.

Day 61: Misty, misty, misty: It was so misty we couldn't see the horses in the field next to the hostel, let alone the harbour in the distance. We wandered into town, did a stroll around the old town again and a walking tour around, trying to find all the places mentioned on the map. After lunch we caught the No. 1 bus for a tour of Torshavn. and back in town met the couple from the bird watching trip. They, like many others were stranded as due to the mist all planes were grounded - (for 2 days until the mist lifted). Still misty that evening. We packed up ready for the next move.
