Day 9
I had an early start to get the Lux express bus to Tallinn, The journey took around 7 hours and the buses were very posh with reclining seats and on the TV they had British pop hits from the eighties. So I was entertained with Paul Young, Wham, Limahl, Genesis and a whole host of unforgettable stars from the eighties:-)
The bus pitched up at the station and I had to catch a tram to get to the Hostel, but couldnt work out how to pay so I ended up breaking my first law in Estonia by fare dodging. I have now worked out where you pay so I will be being a good boy in future.
I was back in an Irish Bar (Molly Malones)that night and got chatting to some Geordie blokes who were working in Tallinn, the place was a bit empty though as they dont tend to go out until 23:00. There are a few Gentlemans clubs here in Tallinn if you are that way inclined, I didnt venture into any though not cause of any moral reasons though, just as I'm too tight.
Day 10
I spent the whole of
today wandering round the medieval town of Tallinn. The old town town that is enclosed within the fortress walls and is why people visit the city. It was a bit warmer than Russia at -3 but there was a strong wind so at times it felt colder, the pubs were nice and warm though:-) I visited the museum of Tallinn history and the maritime museum which were OK.
I was back in Mollys that night, early again at 21:00 and spent most of it chatting to an Irish chap, at around 23:00 he had to leave and I was about to leave myself when I started talking to a German girl called Magdalena. She seemed nice enough and then we were joined by 2 hilarious Irish girls who accompanied us to a very dodgy Karaoke bar. At 02:30 I called it a day and headed back to the hostel.
Day 11
The next day I was talking to one of the guys working in the hostel about my night out and when I mentioned a German girl, he asked if her name was Magdalena, I asked how did he know. And he said that he had fell into
the same trap as I and that she was the local crazy bird. Apparently she's been barred from most of the hostels in Tallinn and has an obsessive quality about her. I didnt intend on meeting her again the following night, but Tallinn is a small town, I'd be looking over my shoulder all night:-)
During the day I had another wander round the rold twon and further afield and took in the museum of occupation, which details the privations the Estonians suffered at the hand of the Soviets for over 40 years. Early on in WWII Stalin invaded and then occupied Estonia and then when Hitler was on the march Germany Occupied the lands and then when Russia forced Germany back into Germany they took control and didn't relinquish the country until 1991.
I put my name down for a pub crawl that night and we joined the group from the Tallinn Backpackers on a night round the old town, it was basically me and a bunch of Aussies which was great I always have a good laugh when I'm out with them. I can't remember much about the night but I know I had a good
time and I got in late and was rough the next day:-(
Boring bits
I stayed at the monks bunk which was pretty rubbish actually but it was cheap at around 8 euros a night
Bus I booked the coach on-line with Lux Express, there are many different types of coaches to choose from depending on the level of comfort.
