This morning we landed in Amsterdam (AMS) to transfer to our Copenhagen flight. All I can say about the Amsterdam airport is wow. This is airport is mostly retailers and it takes shopping to a new level. Thank goodness I did not shop or I would have been broke before the trip started. The only disappointing part of the airport was there is very little air conditioning and the restrooms are down below the terminal so access is limited to those who can climb stairs. My poor mother-in-law could not use the restroom until we got on the plane.
We boarding our flight to Copenhagen flying SAS (http://www.flysas.com/en/?vst=true). Our first class cabin was like flying Southwest Airlines we the seat shrunk, yuck. Aside from the seat size, we did a get a full meal on our 55 minute trip. The funniest part of the plane ride was watching the video screen of the ground when taking off and landing and then showing reruns of Tom and Jerry. It set the mood well. Another funny thing is the first class bathroom was about 3 times the size of a normal airline bathroom including window shades. Incredible.
We arrived at the Copenhagen airport about 1200pm noon. Very interesting airport. The boarding area for the terminal was very quiet, very unusual in my eyes. However once we arrived in the arrivals area, it was totally different. This area was bustling. After gathering our luggage we took a cab to our hotel. Our hotel was the Marriott-Copenhagen overlooking one of the many canals in the city. The interior of the hotel is charming and very open feeling. There are areas to sit outside overlooking the canal. There is a beautiful lobby bar and café area. The hotel rooms are spacious and very comfortable. Our view was of the canal; however I wish we could have been on the Tivoli side overlooking the world famous amusement park.
After checking into the hotel, I ventured out to explore a small part of Copenhagen before the rest of our family arrived. Walking through the streets and next to the various canals is breathtaking. The first area I stopped by and took photos was Christiansborg Palace. After my short visit at Christiana Palace I walked around looking at the fantastic architecture. I then stopped at the Christianborg Palace Church. Back in 1996
this church burnt causing significant damage to the structure. It was rebuilt and completed in 2004. I attached a few photos of the before and after views.
I returned to the hotel after a couple of hours of walking to meet with everyone else from our family. We ate dinner in the hotel lobby and then my daughter, wife and I went to visit the amusement park of Tivoli. Here is a little history of the park. This evening was park was open until 11:00pm. This is an admission only park and then pay for the rides. In the evening the park is lit up with a variety and design of lights. Attached are a couple of photos of the lights. While in park, we watched a stage show that was very interesting. Attached is a photo from the show. Lastly my wife and daughter rode a rollercoaster. My daughter was so excited she rode a rollercoaster in another country. Too sum up this park, it is absolutely incredibly lively and fun from an entertainment point of view but also just people and light watching. Worth the visit in Copenhagen.
