We arrived in Copenhagen main station and met Lulu right away after getting off our train. Josh and I had met Lulu studying in Glasgow and she was back in town for a while to see a music festival before heading back to finish her studies in Glasgow. There were four of us needing a place to stay and Lulu had only one room available so Sierra and I offered to spend the night in a hostel. Lulu showed us to a place called danhostel which was massive and looked more like a huge hotel than any hostel I had seen. It was also the most expensive place I have stayed up until this point costing around 50 US dollars per night. Lulu, Jake and Josh split with us at this point to head to her place and drop off their stuff. Sierra and I took a bit of a stroll to find some food after dropping our bags at the hostel (check in was 2 pm). We found a nice looking place with a lunch buffet and apparently it only cost like 50 crowns which is one of the best deals we would end up finding in copenhagen (50
crowns = 7 euros). The place we ate at was a new restaurant apparently and as such it was relatively cheap. The buffet was all you could eat in one hour which was kind of strange but the food was quite good. After a good meal we headed to the square where we were to meet the others and grabbed a coffee while we waited. We met up again and all headed to walk around the city for a while. Copenhagen felt like it was a bit grey and somewhat dreary (might have been the weather at the time) but it was an incredibly beautiful city. It seemed to offer a wide array of different things that some of the other cities in Europe had but it had its own style as well. It was also huge as there were tons of places to walk that had amazing buildings and cool little canals. This was the first city I had been in so far that I would say had a definite Scandinavian feel as well. I noticed quite a bit more blond hair and people seemed to be quite tall on average. On wandering the city we made a pitstop
at a bakery which was supposed to be one of the better ones in copenhagen according to Lulu. I must say the brownie from the place was one of the best ive ever had and the danish pastry was delicious as well. We ended up walking to a place called christiania later in the afternoon to see some reggae music at a festival that was going on there. It was one of the most unique places I think ive seen. First off, it is a community within Copenhagen that is essentially like its own country. Residents dont pay taxes and live in houses they they build themselves. People also smoke pot relatively as they wish although it is not considered legal according the police as of recently. Furthermore pictures are not allowed in most parts because they dont want there to be a reason for the place to be abolished along with it being something that you supposedly must experience rather than view pictures of. There were quite a few dogs wandering the place and tons of amazing graffitti all over the place. There were also a few small bars and various artistic sculptures and such scattered around the place.
It is a very difficult place to describe with words and I think it was best summed up by simply calling it abstract. We looked at a few cool shops people had set up here and then sat down for some reggae music in an open large bar area. After the music which was better than I had expected, we walked further within the place to an extremely beautiful lake area surrounded by houses built by the inhabitants. It was a very picturesque lake and odd to think that if not within such an area, the land value would be incredibly high as it was in the middle of the city. After walking around a bit more Sierra and I headed back to our hostel to check in and shower while the others went to Lulu's place. It was already pretty late by the time we had showered and grabbed food. Sierra decided to stay at the hostel and pass out as we had barely any sleep the night before. I was still doing ok so I headed over to Lulu's place by metro to see where it was and hang out for a while. It was a bit tough
to find and I had to buzz every person on the apartment list but found it eventually and stayed there for a bit. I then headed home before the metro stopped running and crashed in the hostel for some much needed rest.
