We are resting for a few days near the border of the Czech republic and Slovakia near a place called Lednice which is part of a UNESCO protected area. Czech has lakes everywhere, mostly formed by dams built dating as far back as the 15th and 16th centuries by rich aristocrats who wanted large private fishing lakes. Some of the dams displaced local people at the time and there was similar kind of political debate at the time as there is now when a dam is built. But they are now so integrated into the natural landscape that they have become biosphere reserves and great swimming holes! The area around here was extensively landscaped in the 18th century, this time by aristocrats who wanted their own personal Greek temples and English neogothic folly castles making ... read more

Now I know it’s not really a frontier any more these days with the EU and all that and they didn’t even look at our passport as we crossed the border from Austria into Czech, although they do still have token customs officers. Left Vienna early this morning. Crossed the Danube River which is Mississippi River in size. Got outside of town and drove by a gladiola field. Our tour director said that there are cash boxes in the fields and people can go and cut flowers and drop what they owe in the cash box. They use the honor systerm and much cheaper than buying in the city. That is very cool. As we headed toward the Czech border, our director gave us an extensive background on the Czech Republic. Czechoslavakia was only formed in 1918 and was put together by political force which is is why later it was divided back into the two countries after the end of the Cold War. Very bohemian origins. Very pretty countryside again as we drove; green, green grass. The area ... read more
