us last night
in front of the gorgeous view of the city- check out that amazing sunset! this might be one of my new favorite pictures ever. the only sad part is that it's missing katie :( good news=she's already starting to feel better. so i didn't get to write about last night- which ended up being a lot of fun- so i'll start there.
last night we met some of the czech students at 9:00 (everyone except for katie, who unfortunately has not been feeling so hot the past 24 hours). we thought they were just going to be taking us to a pub, but no! even better, they told us we were going up to the prague castle area. prague castle is high up above the city, so we hiked up this hill (there were steps, but it was a little grueling lol) we were all getting a little winded by the time we reached the top-- but when we finally did, it was absolutely breathtaking. the sun was setting at this point, and we were experiencing the best possible view of the city. it was fabulous! we walked around for about 2 hours- the area surrounding the castle is pretty extensive, and amazingly wonderful. it was like getting a preview- we learned our way around that area a little bit, and so when we go during the day to actually take tours of w/e we'll feel a little more confident in
from last night
a back view of the prague castle, at sunset of course our navigating skills. plus it was awesome being there at night.
we eventually ended up going to mcdonalds for a quick bite to eat before the pub. this mcdonalds was probably the nicest one i've ever been in, and the menu is much more extensive (i think...i haven't actually been to a mcdonalds in the states in forever). i got a mcflurry, and it was about half the size of one i would get in america-- i couldn't help thinking about how it showed just how much americans overeat lol. we went to a pub after mcdonalds- i didn't feel much like drinking since I was pretty tired, and shortly after we left. we also had to wake up pretty early again, so i kind of just wanted to go back and sleep.
today we woke up at 7 to do our breakfast thing and left for the school around 8:30. after everyone showed up at 9:30 (it's pretty laid back here...lol) ladislav gave a presentation about the czech republic's change from socialism to capitalism, and how this affected the advertising industry. it was pretty interesting- it was nice just being able to listen and not worrying about
from this afternoon
us in front of another beautiful view our presentations anymore. 😊
we were thru at around 11, and planned to meet up again at 1:00- so dionne and i just decided to stay at the school (this was where we were meeting up again in 2 hours) so we hung out with jarek just messing around on his laptop. we watched some fun little flash movies and stuff (if you want to see something the one my friends and i are currently obsessed with, google "charlie the unicorn" and click on the first hit that pops up). also, he helped us to put online short little movies dionne made on her camera the other day. so mine is online! here it is! (the sound gets a little bit off from the mouth movements, but whatevs...the video is from patricia's barbeque, and i'm sitting with jarek. he is HILARIOUS and we all love him)
so at 1:00 we all met up to head over to the czech national bank. they have a new permanent exhibition all about their currency and how it has changed over the years- some of the coins were as old as the 10th century! it was pretty impressive. it sort of felt like our first touristy thing to do since we've been here, i guess just because it was an actual exhibit kind of thing.
from the bank we all headed to this pub near the prague castle (so up that same hill, but this time we took a tram which put a smile on everyone's faces) this pub is famous for making its own beer- so i had one, but it tasted a little funny to me. kind of bitter...i kind of made a face every time i took a sip of it. it tasted pretty different from the other 2 i've had- but oh well, it was fine. 😊
after we finished eating, the czech students presented ladislav and sandy with small gifts, and postcards for us. the postcards were signed with a special message and signatures of all them- i think it might be the thing i will treasure most from the trip! ok now that i've been corny enough...it was sad because then we said goodbye to a lot of them. the class is over, and many of them are going to be doing other things like traveling and stuff for the rest of the time that we'll be in europe. 😞
although it was only about 10 days that we knew them, it was really sad realizing we'll probably never see them again. we might chat online/send emails or something- but yeah. it was kind of strange giving them hugs goodbye, realizing we'd only known them for a little over a week. these are some of the nicest, most genuine people i've ever met- and i'm so glad we had the chance to work with them.
we headed back to the dorm, and have been chilling since about 6. we've been so busy and running around so much, it's nice to just sit back and relax for a little bit- especially since we leave for vienna friday morning!!! i am psyched.
also- i think that tomorrow night i might not be able to post (which would mean no post until sunday night) because we are planning (as long as we can still get the tickets, which i'm pretty positive we can) to go to the opera! mozart's don giovanni was first performed at the estates theatre in prague (right next door to the emperor's hall from the first day of class), and now because this year is mozart's 250th birthday they will be performing the show all of this month and next at that same theatre. this excites us a great deal (even though we've never actually been to an opera or anything...) and we're looking forward to dressing up for a night of culture 😊 hopefully this will work out for tomorrow night...if not i'm sure we'll get to see it sometime over the next 2 weeks.
