Ginko, Nic and Chriso got in at about 02.30. Apparently Chriso was talking Swahili to a rough looking local with scars all over his face. Ginko was a bit worried, but it turned out to be all good. While Beck and I had avoided the absinthe, they had tried it last night. It was good to have had a decent night’s sleep. It was a slow start for everyone else, so I went to the supermarket and got breakfast supplies. Unbelievably the supermarket is literally only 30 metres from the hostel, but I still got lost! My sense of direction is terrible.
After breakfast we headed to the Jewish cemetery but there was a big queue so we vowed to come back later. We walked along the river which is a great part of Prague and also gave us great views. We went looking for the skeleton looking wall, but we couldn’t find it, but we managed to see a lot of the city in the process. The same as yesterday I took a lot of photos.
On the river there was a Red Bull sponsored ‘Birdman’ type of event like they have at Moomba at home. There was a huge
crowd, so it was hard to find a decent position to see them jumping off the platform, let alone a seat. After lots of indecision we found a quiet restaurant with no views of the birdmen, but it had shade and chairs! It was good to relax our feet after two days of walking.
We had a light lunch with a couple of beers that recharged the batteries. Then it was back out into the sun and crowds where we managed to see a couple of birdman candidates jump from the platform and into the river. Amongst the crowd we saw 6 separate Aussies in a small area, the highlight being the bloke sweating in his Big V jumper. We were all going to head back to the hostel at this point, but I was determined to find the skeleton wall. Beck and Chriso came with me, while Ginko and Nic went to sort out the bus/trains they have to catch next.
We found the skeleton wall, which was actually a Grotto Wall. It was an amazing park area, which had impressive architecture as well as gardens. It was lucky Chriso and I didn’t pack our guns, as there was
a sign stating ‘no guns’ allowed in the park, which we found pretty funny.
The pictures on the walls of the architecture were pretty special and very much unexpected. There was ponds full of huge carp, and there was a peacock (?) that looked like it was suffering from bird flu. After taking heaps more photos we headed back towards the square, buying a couple of prints on the side of the river along the way. This was followed by purchases of a marionette at the market and a babushka from a shop. It was good to get back to the hostel, and Ginko and Nic were back soon after us. We paid for the hostel and then headed to a beer garden to watch the England versus Equador game. Budvar was on tap and has to be the best beer we’ve tasted, much better than Pilsner Urquell.
After a few pints and a snack it was time for us to leave. I went and got the backpacks, breaking the zipper on Kez’s backpack that she had lent us in the process. Then it was time to say our goodbyes. It was a bit sad, we wont see Ginko and
Nic for six months, although we’ll see Chriso soon. Dragging ourselves away we caught the train and bus without any dramas. There was a big queue at the check in. After we got through we bought Kez and Rod some duty free and then waited for our plane.
Our flight was delayed 15 minutes. Our seats were surrounded by guys that had been on a stag do all weekend, and took an interest in Beck, chatting away. This was the first flight we encountered any real turbulence, and you could see lightning out the window, although it wasn’t too bad.
We got through immigration in London without hassle, then we bought two tickets to catch the train to London Bridge to meet Kez and Rod at Fatty’s, but they couldn’t wait as Fatty’s was closing, so we caught a taxi back to Grays (80 pounds). More than what our flights cost. I had a quick bath once we got home, and then it was into bed a bit after one.
