Our next big stop in Croatia is for Split. I took the small coastal road from Dubrovnik to Split (the one going by Bosnia!). This is not a long ride, but it is a beautiful one, till you get closer to Split. You just have to make sure you have all the time in front of you to enjoy the scenery, and maybe few other slow cars in front of you. I book a proper five stars hotel, which did advertise on big rooms...big mistake, we did end up in a huge hotel complex, Le Meridien...ok, nice little upgrade as usual, but nothing impressive. Just after we arrived, we went down to the "beach and swimming pool". Put it this way, even Leslie couldn't stay in the place longer than 30 minutes....this is what I call ... read more

Dubrovnik, just a short ride from Vela Luka....and another world to it all together. First tourists are here in mass, so it is important to be organized...meaning, to explore, wake up early...or go late in the day. Our little home for two days, The Hilton Imperial. Only open for five years, the place has been nicely renovated to his Grand old style. But the best part of it is the lounge...slightly more private...with a little terrace on the fourth floor facing the sea and the Old Town...and they serve you good croatian wines all day long. As the hotel is only 200 meters from the Old Town, this was our "camp base"...some walking...some lounging...some more walking.... We stay here for 2 nights. we took our time to visit the Old Town during the afternoon, but also ... read more

Its been a while since a two day blog, about 89 days or so. Just like that day I have little to write about except for traveling. I should have just called this blog Planes, Trains and Automobiles but I liked using my terrible pun in the title instead. Of course, I did not fly for this trip. I replaced that mode of transit with a ferry. Started my day (Aug. 8) in Sarajevo and took a late morning bus down to Split. A journey that looks like it should take only about 3 or 4 hours on a map but which takes about 7 or 8 in reality. The problem is that these two countries (BiH & Croatia) pretty much have no highways so its winding local roads the whole way on the trip. Plus ... read more

This is the first stop of our Venitian adventure...you are going to tell me, what has Croatia to do with Venice...the answer is simple, read your history books. So first, few kilometers from the north-east of Hungary to the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. We did a little stop to the Lake Balaton...I was curious to see the "Hungarian Sea". I'm not really impressed to be honest. To me, it looks more like a succession of basic concrete three stars hotels....not really sure I want to spend many days in these concrete blocks! Than on to Croatia, not much to see from the highway, till we left it just after Split. Ideal would have been to take the ferry from Split to Vela Luka on Korcula Island. Well, we were still 80km from the port at the ... read more

Dubrovnik - a pearl at the Adriatic Sea tainted by tourism We would like to start this blog entry by saying that Dubrovnik has a beautiful old town enclosed by a very well preserved city wall. But unfortunately many others have also realised that Dubrovnik is beautiful so on a normal summer day there are way too many tourists there. So many that it really killed the joy of being there and we weren't able to admire the wonderful buildings. Sometimes we complain that there are tourists at the places we visit. We understand if people think this is ironic or even stupid since we are tourists ourselves. We say we don't like the tourists but at the same time we are also tourists so we are part of the problem. Well, stupid and ironic it ... read more

Spent the morning here getting organized for the next part of my trip. Walked down to the bus station to get my bus ticket up to Mostar for the following day and then walked over to the Jadronlinija ferry offices at the port to book a ferry ticket back to Italy the night of the 8th. From there I'll just train it back across Italy to Sorrento. There is this island called Lokrum that sits just off the coast near the Old Town here. Apparently it's a pretty popular place to spend a day in the summer with nice beaches, soccer fields, cafes, lounge areas, good hiking, etc. You can take a ferry out there but I decided to rent a kayak and make my way over there myself and it was well worth it. Did ... read more

Arrived in the port around 8am and made my way over to my hostel just around the port. Met this Dutch guy who it turns out was on the same ferry as me last night and after talking for a bit decided to walk over to the Old Town together. Bout a 45 minute walk but was well worth it since most of it is along the shoreline which is spectacular. From above I could see all these little tucked away coves with people swimming and others laying out on the nearby rocks. Made a mental note to come back later. The old town is really as spectacular as I expected. I've wanted to come here a while and it did not disappoint. It's actually pretty small in scale and we were able to walk all ... read more

Got off to a slow start this morning and after lounging around on the patio a group of four of us walked over to the local beach. Had the two English guys (Anthony & Jaime) and the Dutch guy I met yesterday (Sonders). Stopped at this little crepe place on the say and had the most amaying crepe for breakfast/lunch. It was filled with cold vanilla ice cream, the perfect contrast to the freshly made crepe. Most of the beaches here just consist of small rocks and no sand but we got used to it pretty quick. Had a nice relaxing afternoon on the crowded beach before heading over to a nearby cafe for a late lunch. I had heard there were a bunch of places along the coastline here where you can find a small ... read more

So, 2 airplane crashes in 2 days, spooky or what ? . Still in Croatia and heading to Italy on Tuesday. Split is really nice and spotlessly clean but have seen all there is to see. Spent last night with 3 US Maries on a stop off on the way back from the middle east after a 6 months tour of duty, goes to prove they are not all mad as they proved to be well educated and interesting. Apart from 2 female 3d year Law students from Glasgow I haven't heard another Scots accent. One gut for some reason claimed to be Scottish but he had a South African accent, he was so drunk he was hanging onto a lampost and coudn't move. Apparently he was claiming to be in the secret services and abusing ... read more

Croatia Split and Hvar After a late night flight to London, I decided a 5 hour stopover over in London Gatwick Yotel may be the best option to allow for a few hours sleep before my early morning flight to Split, Croatia. I walked through customs and within 20 metres I saw the entrance to Yotel, extremely convenient. Despite being a little pricy I was very glad to have somewhere to wait for my upcoming flight. My flight with Easyjet to Split was smooth flying and quite scenic as we flew over snow capped mountains in the Alps. On arrival in Split I was once again met with the stifling heat, but was glad to now be in a seaside location. Split is a very beautiful, busy city on the sea. It was exciting to meet ... read more
