The old town of
Dubrovnikis surrounded by a wall. For a fee, you can climb to the top of this wall and walk around it's entirety. First, I was sort of turned off that you had to pay to do this, but after doing so, I think it is 100%!w(MISSING)orth it. Your ticket also gets you into the Fort Lovrijenac, which is another must see.
We awoke early today, in order to be on time for our free tour that was to begin at 9am, from the tourist office. The tour was a walking tour, given by Maja, a local of Dubrovnik. The tour was through the old city, and lasted 1 hour. It was mostly stories about the Homeland War in the 1990s. I found it fascinating to learn of more of the recent history, and also to hear what it was like living there during the bombardment.
The old town took many direct hits, and we saw a map that showed each hit. UNESCO was on site to mark them, and also to painstakingly re-create the city after the war. It was interesting to learn that the American Association of Travel Agents played a large part
in rebuilding the city too.
After our tour, we watched a group of youths performing a traditional dance in the square. There was an oyster festival happening, but none of us our big fans of oysters. I can eat them, but they are far from my favorite.
We went for a quick lunch at Buffet Škola. It is a local sandwich shop, and I must say the food and service were excellent! Once filled up, we were ready to conquer the wall! We started at the entrance close to the Pile Gate.
Lots of stairs to go up, but once there, the views are amazing! I liked the entire walk, but I think the views out over the Adriatic on this sunny day were the best part. We walked very leisurely, stopping many times for photos, and just to soak it all in. The only break we took, was to tour the Maritime Museum, which is near the harbor. This museum was very well done, and we had it to ourselves. They also have a WC that you do not have to pay to use. Unfortunately, no photography was allowed in the museum, and they were watching.
We finished with the walls after maybe 3 hours or so? It was tiring, but oh so fun!
For dinner, we went back to Pizzeria Tabasco. This visit, we enjoyed the jumbo salami pizza and it was very tasty.
After our pizza, we went down to Banje Beach and looked around. It would have been so lovely to snorkel here in Croatia! I never thought of bringing any swim suit, since it still early in the season, but some people were swimming, and I think it would been warm enough in the daytime to do so. Next time!
On our walk back to the apartment, we stopped for some dessert crepes at Dolce Vita. Very good place!
Back at our arpartment, our daughter rested, while my wife and I walked around some of the narrow pathways, archways, and stairways near the building. Such a nice place to get lost! It is easy to remember and get around though.
We went to sleep so we could get ready for the next morning. It was showing rain for Sunday afternoon, so we wanted to see stuff before it began. Also, the time would change one hour
forward this night, so we would lose an hour of sleep.
