Wow Sibenik! Wow! So beautiful! An iconic looking Mediterranean style small town built on a slope leading up to the medieval forts of St Michael's and St John's.
Our "micro room" was in the middle of the old town with our shutters opening out to a romantic court yard cafe.
Our tiny room was equipped with everything we needed for a 1 night stop. So great to have our own space as well! Not that we didn't appreciate the kindness and hospitality of our Croatian host in Zadar but we are too old for that and we craved our space and freedom.
Sibenik is perfect. Such a maze of romantic alleyways and a comfortable balance of tourists and locals. An absolutely beautiful swimming beach just a short walk further along the coast past all the water front cafes. My opinion is that many towns lacked trees. So extremely hot in the summer heat walking on the polished tiled alleyways that reflected even more heat. Lack of urban trees and public water fountains had been the case every where we had been so far. I felt terribly for all the overheated, panting dogs that I noticed being walked
Tomas and I
separated for 2 hours of independent exploration after settling in. I wandered around the cobbled streets and waterfront popping in to the ancient local churches and climbing steep steps to St Michael's Fortress for magnificent views towering over Sibenik and the surrounding islands.
Tomas and I then met up and shared photos before we strolled to the beautiful clear blue swimming beach where we spent the rest of the afternoon. There we met 3 English boys who had cycled from Rijeka but that day had cycled from Zadar, the same distance we had come by bus. Tomas said he had seen then on the narrow road as the bus squeezed passed them earlier that day.
We ate dinner in our micro room as we had the luxury and freedom of our own space, a supermarket and the ability to fix something healthy.
We took in the atmosphere of all the waterfront restaurants and romantic coutyards and then late evening discoveted a children's movie with puppets being filmed in an outdoor courtyard near our unit with music and lighting so we sat and watched. Sibenik was hosting the International Children's festival.
That was regretfully our only evening in Sibenik.
The next morning i was feeling anxious as we left Sibenik. It was my "Goldilocks" town. Not too big, not too small and our room had been so perfectly located with the beach not too far. I was too tired to move. I just wanted to be comfortable. We didn't get to stay long enough and it had been such a beautiful stop.
Then the bus was half an hour late leaving and the driver appeared to make up time by not picking anyone up along the way. I figured this as I saw them all raising their arms in disbelief and swearing as we zoomed past.
My first sight of the big city of Split was overwhelming and, at first, all that i could see was ugly, which made me feel even more anxious but that didn't last long.
