i just spent 3 hours in a bulgarian police station - which is kinda funny because it happened 10 hours after i left my aussie chaperones/accent mockers... (yeah yeah lets hear it, at least i have a sense of direction) i arrived at 6.30am on a sleeper train, first things first went to change some money at the currency exchange office in the train station... and got ripped off by about a third, despite the big words printed on the office 'no commission', and the fact that it was in a train station, which you'd think would be the official place. well that will be the last time i change money without knowing how much roughly i should get... luckily i only lost out on about NZ$80. but i told the lady who runs the ... read more

Thursday March 8. Last night I accessed my e-mails. I had e-mails from Alison, Peter and Tony. I replied and Peter replied again almost immediately. It is still amazing for me this internet. As so usual it is difficult to get out of these cities on a bike with the roads built for cars and of motorway standard. At the start of the E80 I asked a police officer for route 8 which runs next to the motorway but he insisted that it was better to use the hard shoulder of the motorway so with some trepidation I did. Not surprisingly I made good progress but at Novi Sad I decided to go on to route 8 - a mistake. For 20 kms I tried to ride on this potholed road which made riding all but ... read more

Debbs and I landed at Varna airport where we were met and accompanied to our little rental apartment in town. Mouths open with surprise. We had landed with little or near enough no expectations and were not at all ready for what we found. What a country! What people! What gorgeous scenery, deliciously tasty food, beautiful coastline, amazingly gorgeous capital... I could just go on praising Bulgaria for hours. I absolutely loved what we saw in the few days we were there. It was a strange experience really, a little like going back in time. Being in Andorra (or Spain even) 20 years ago. When you could park anywhere, no ticket machines or traffic wardens, when you pull up at a petrol station and a smiley attendant fills your tank and washes your windscreen... When there ... read more

Finally the day arrived! The most anticipated trip of all! We were all really excited about going snowbording, we had been preparing ourselves for a few months now. Arriving in Sofia we had a driver waiting to take us to Bansko. The ride was rough, long and we really started to wonder if we were going the right direction - we finally got there at ten in the evening. Everyday it was a really early start mainly because we couldn't hold the boys in the chalet for very long. We rented our equipment and up we went to the slopes, that's when we actually realized what we were getting ourselves into and the fact that except for Ant none of us had ever snowboarded. Jana ski's evey winter but she thought that as everyone was ... read more

Bulgaria: - A land of just over 7 million people. It has been strange moving from London which has the same population. - Still a couple of steps, well maybe quite a few behind that of Western European countries. - Vesso (who I work with) said to me; ‘so is this your first trip to Bulgaria?’ and on replying yes he said ‘well you will be surprised’ -about what I said? “everything” This has proved to be true on more than one occasion. Bulgarians - Probably the most proud people I have ever met. Especially old Vesso. He is such a character. He keeps going on about how those “fucken Greeks” they stole Feta from us and then patented it even though it is a Bulgarian creation! He is always trying to educate Stu and I ... read more

It was great to see the country from the perspective of an insider- my girlfriend was born and spent her childhood in Bulgaria. I was exicited about my first visit to an ex-communist country and I must say that the 'cardboard' looking cars didn't dissapoint me. Neither did the centre of Sophia... better not to talk about the suburbia though, like any other city really. My heart stays with Plodiv though, after a 2-hours-trip by coach from Sophia (it felt longer), we got to this beautiful - quaint city with loads of Roman legacy - the views from the anphitheatre are amazing. My girlfriend's relatives presented us with a feasty variety of sweets and drinks (the ayran is very popular). Another trip by coach and we were in Nesseber (after passing by Benidorm-tacky-looking sea resorts and ... read more

Hello everyone, Yes it is us! The long lost travellers - my apologies for not keeping you a little more up to date with what has been happening. So, we arrived back in London and we have settled in quite well here. We share a house in Shepherds Bush with 3 others who have made us feel quite at home. Steve is still working North of London and I got a 2 week contract with a government agency over here just before Christmas.... I am still there. My contract finishes (for good!) at the end of March so I am currently putting my feelers out to see if I can find something else. The lead up to Christmas was pretty uneventful. We attended a football match between Tottenham and Middlesborough which was good fun. I have ... read more

The overpowering odor of BO smacked me in the face after leaving Istanbul. Lucky to have the bus seat to myself, a tiny girl watched me for a while before visiting my seat to scribble in my journal. We stopped at the Turkish-Bulgarian border and waited to pass out of Turkey. On the Bulgarian border, there were five identical duty free shops. The people on the bus raced for the shops: it wasn't shopping; it was BUYING. I walked into one shop and a man from my bus demanded my passport. He handed it to the clerk, where they recorded the number, and the man ordered 9 cartons of cigarettes. Nine CARTONS! Why would they want my passport in a duty free store? Because there is a QUOTA per person when buying cigarettes and alcohol. ... read more

So my day off. Once a week. Let's explore. So I jumped into my good friend Nadezdahs beat up old Volkswagen and off we went. Razlog first. We parked the car, not without Nadezdah ramming the car into a flower pot and laughing it off. She is such a happy go lucky girl and so so sweet. We wondered the streets which I love to do more than anything when I get to a new place. Stumbled upon a large street market which was so fun. They were selling everything from rubber soled shoes to hand made brush brooms and turksih delight. Next thing we knew we were in an old old Orthodox church. SO beautiful, it truly was. The lady inside was astounded that I was from Ujena Afrika (south africa) She was so lovely ... read more
